The wire broke on one of mine and ended up in a creek bed and the corn in it got wet so I replaced the chain and corn on Father's Day when I went out there. Just got a text from my dad. Both the barrels on his property are almost empty again. Crop circles!

I experimented and cut a square door on top. That way I could install eye bolt and fill corn easier. I just cut 3 sides and use a bolt and wing nut attached to good old cutting board material. I'll let yall know how it works, the hogs haven't found it yet. They are hitting my screw top drum on the property pretty hard though.

Nice. Hopefully they hold up! The hogs put a beating on em. I had to fix/replace a few parts on the 2 I had at my dads this summer. They lasted a year before the wire rope broke on one and one of the the swivels broke on the other.

I made a couple for the property north of Houston that I had acces to but they would never get on those. Frank suggested running peanut butter on the side of the barrel and starting out with bigger holes to get them trained that corn comes out when rolled. Never had a chance to do that with the peanut butter bc I lost access to the property. I did have to make big holes to get me started on em at my dads place last year though.

Nice, I'll try the PB. Was gonna try cat food inside too after reading this thread.

More good ideas! Looks heavy from the hogs activity, I never put more than 50 lbs at a time, have a cow bell on them and small rock so it sounds like corn is in it even when empty. Yes when I hunt I have a spare cow bell w me and can shake it telling hogs in the area some one is feeding at the barrel...lol

Yes it didn't take me long to realize I'd put too much(130lbs). I took a bunch out and it's down to around 100lbs but I think I better remove more. Only the largest boars are pushing it. Cow bell sounds like a great idea, I'll give that a try, thanks Frank.

I have 3 feed stations, timed feeders, barrels and troughs at each, those long range cow bells are great. If I am in one stand and hear the bell on a barrel at another location I can stalk into that area or start ringing my bell and they may come running...it is too funny sometimes! Got the bells at tractor supply, mediums but the long distance sound, seems to me they were 5-8 bucks each.

I do add about 2lbs dry dog food or cat food to the corn in the barrels along w the small rocks that will not come out.

I did the same thing at first too putting too much corn in. It was too heavy for it to be worth their while.

That's cool, you are set up. Love it. Maximizing your chances. That's what started me doing the barrels. Came up empty too many nights before.

Great post. I’m new to the forum but thought I’d add a few pig pipe rolling photos.

I recently set up a new pig pipe and it only took 4 days for the hogs to figure it out (unfortunately coons too). I hadn’t thought about using a barrel but that’s a great idea. I love the idea of a cow bell but didn’t want to push scaring them off. It’s a great idea for sure!!

I have yet to see a pickle barrel with that smaller screw off lif available in my area since this thread began. I guess we just don't like pickles here in Mississippi?

I did see one in Argentina two years ago. Haha.

I have seen them at ACE hardware used as rain water collectors too, the 15 gallon ones are all over craigslist and some 55's with bungholes, just need a big funnel you can make...ask your feed stores I am betting they will order for you

I can find the 15 gallon barrels with a single handle in the center of the top around here regularly. They are used for concentrated soda and the ones I have bought already had left over dr. pepper in them. Worked great and I didn't need to add any attractant. If you remove the handle, the mounting tab is perfect size for a shackle to go through to attach the chain.

Chopper they are also used at car washes for soap

I kind of figured that was the same design barrel, but if they had food products in them, you don't have to spend the time cleaning them out first and it gives you a couple more options of where to look.
