Goal: Night ride/walk

Environment: Rain, no moon or stars low clouds.

Equipment: .22LR, sling, ir-laser, eotech, thermal, lrf, 3x, .45, helmet, dual 14s, stick, canteen.

Activity: Put on gear in buggy. Able to find arm holes in wet suit top with no trouble. Able to position hands on zipper and zip quickly. One mistake was pulled left glove out of pocket before zipping wet suit, so had to put glove down. Rule is glove goes back in pocket.

This buggy has glass on front. To avoid fogging pushed window open from bottom. It opens about a foot at the bottom, but hinges at the top. I could see pretty well with the 14s, out the sides and bottom, around the glass but not through the glass with the rain.
First had to roll about .75 miles to neighbors to deliver mail inadvertantly left at our house. This happens 2-3 times a year, when there is a substitute mail person. I call myself "4th Class Mailman Joe" when making such deliveries. The neighbors smile.

The rain was steady and what I would call "moderate". But growing up in Florida, for me a "heavy" rain is one in which you can't see over 10yds.

Then rolled across Turtle Creek Bridge and up to the top of Signal (One Tree) Hill and went on foot. With 14s I could see two section lights within 1 mile, 2 towers within 5 miles, and bare haze of light from Topeka, about 35 miles away. It was dark. With thermal, I could see roofs of two of our buildings and horizons and ponds but nothing else all else was washed out.
Walked down East side of Signal Hill, across pond dam and up to hill 1309. From 1309 looking South the the thermal, I was able to find the cows. They were on the West side of the "Central Valley" as I call the drainage area which contains our pond. I cycles through the pallets and eventually decided the "rain" pallet was clearly best. The cows showed up red hot on either a green (top half of lens) or red (bottom half of lens) background. I decreased the brightness three clicks, and that seems to increased the contrast. The cows were quite "blob-like" but I played with the focus until blob-i-ness was minimized. I counted up to 13 cows. There was 37 over there, so the others were farther down in the draw, below my line of vision. I could see the cows moving. Blobs would split apart and merge together. When a cow was broadside to me, I could see the shape.
I decided to try to lase the cows to see how far away they were. I could not see them with the 14s. So I slipped on the 3x magnifier. Then I could see them. I lased between 372 and 395 yds for the cows. So they were closer than usual, farther down in the draw.
I then took a sip of water and headed back to Signal Hill.
In the buggy, driving was slow as I could only see out the sides and below the glass. But I know this ground, so was able to keep cognizant of the fence line and certain trees by which to navigate. I could barely see the buggy trail the grass has grown to high. When go down hill to Turtle Creek had to be careful. If you get off the trail here you will plung off the bridge either 15 feet onto rocks or 8 feet into a pond above this bridge. Or you might crash into the steel gate beyond. I managed to navigate through safely and RTB.

Gear was wet but all gear worked. I wore balaklava, wet suit top, light jacket (unzipped) underneath, glove on left hand.

Result: With other pallets, cows were barely visible, but with "rain" pallet they were very visible. Unmagnified 14s could not see cows, magnified 14 could see cows (black blobs). Glass can be a visual hindrance in the rain.
I need to get a DVR so I can resume taking video.
This was a fun ride/walk and I was happy the gear worked fine.

Ok, the DVR I got with the Apollo got "wore out". I sent it back for a replacement. While I am waiting, I think I need a second one (two is one). I know TLM uses MDVR. Where is a good place to get one and how do I know cabling will work with Apollo?

== EDIT ==

Ok, what about this?

http://www.ultimatenightvision.com/DVR-Recorder-for-Thermal-Scopes-p/unv-mdvr.htm

There seems to be an option to click for zeus/apollo cabling. Looks simple enough, is this the one?

My old "Armasight" DVR mounted on a rail, actually on the side of the Apollo (or on 3 o'clock position on forearm rail). It looks like the MDVR does not have a "rail mount" option. I will call UNV and ask.

I called UNV, the MDVR does not have a rail mount option (though I guess I could "red-neck" one together if I wanted to).
They suggested the optional stock pouch, instead of the standard stock pouch. It would increase their revenue!
I wonder if I need the extension cable.
The battery is not suggested to be changed in the field. With my Armasight DVR, it used 2xc123, just like the Apollo. Batteries interchangable. Also the Armasight DVR could be switched into standby mode and extend the life of the Thermal (while giving up the DVR capability). The MDVR cannot do that.
So life is full of trade-offs, but I would like to have a DVR, so thinking about pulling trigger on MDVR today. Any thoughts welcome.

Finally got UNV web site to take order for MDVR ... been trying for 4 days ... hopefully it will be here by end of week.

Goal: Night observation walk.

Environment: Plenty of rain lately. Pasture squishy wet. Stars visible, big, dipper overhead.

Equipment: .22LR, eotech, 14 with 3x on rifle, sling. Helmet with 14, thermal on lanyard around neck, canteen, .45acp.

Activity: Headed across Turtle Creek Bridge and up to Signal hill. Saw rat, running along beside vehicle building. The rat poison is being eaten, so there aren't as many as there would be otherwise. Saw squirel running along tree line.
At Signal Hill, saw 9 cows to the South at 600yds and 21 cows to the NW at 1,400yds with the thermal on Sepia. Thermal performance was good tonight, the hotter sun we had during most of the day may have removed some moisture from the air.
Headed down to the pond. Lots of noises. Frogs and crickets abound. The pond overflow system (a 30 foot pipe through the dam) was roaring, the pond is full.
While cross the pond bridge, saw a deer 50yds to the East. It was in grazing posture. It slowly made its way to the North and then to the East. I switched to black hot and was able to get decent image at 1x, 2x and 4x.
I don't have DVR, my old one broke. I am looking at getting a new one. Probably MDVR.
After a time, I took a sip and retraced my path back across the pond bridge, back along the Southern fence line over Signal Hill, back to Turtle Creek Bridge and home.

Results: Even with all the rain and the wetness in the pasture, the thermal performance was good tonight. Trees and buildings were crisp and the critters showed up more clearly than previous two outings. The surefire batteries are working well.
Will definitely get DVR this week, so I can record again.

Got MDVR today. Gee, I hope I can figure out where to put it. The old Apollo DVR mounted right on the Apollo, so didn't have to worry about where to carry the DVR. It went where ever the thermal went. The MDVR wants to be NOT mounted to the thermal, so it will have to be somewhere else.
The pic in the manual shows mounting it on the rear right side of the stock. The cable is not nearly long enough for that and I got an extra six inch extension cable because I didn't want to have a short cable problem and it is still way too short.
So I will have to try to mount it somewhere else. If it had a rail mount like the old DVR, I could mount it to some rail anywhere ... but no rail mount. Maybe I can use some gorilla tape to tape it to something?

Each rifle and each configuration of each rifle, will likely require a different solution and then when I want to use the thermal on a lanyard around my neck that will require another solution - oh boy - I didn't realize how complex this would be! :D

Well for tonight, I will run the MDVR on the .22LR and the .22LR right now has the EOTECH on it, so I velcroed the MDVR to the top of the eotech like a hat. I might have even seen TLM do that once, though maybe it was in a dream, I couldn't find the image. So I have a solution for tonight. Still need to mount the on/off switch and get the wires out of the way. A lot more complex than the old Armasight DVR which was plug and play! I did test the MDVR and it did work. But with no ability to change the batteries in the field, once it is down it is down and I've already put noticable use on the battery just with setting up the device and testing. So back to the charger!

Went out last night and got some video with MDVR ... I'm not on my usual PC, so don't have "movie maker" up and running on this one ... tried to download and install it but getting "MF.dll" missing errors ...

Is anyone using anything other than movie maker?

Thanks! I didn't realize that thread was about this topic!

Ideas are flowing ... I am looking in the parts box ... might be some things in there I can use to improvise a mount ... thanks!!!

Goal: Test new MDVR

Environment: Light rain, mud. No moon or stars.

Equipment: Apollo with MDVR on EOTECH on .22LR

Activity: Went out to South pasture to observe cows. The gate you see is 100yds, the cows are 150-200yds. I cycle through the pallets. The image is rather poor, looks worse than what I saw with MkIEB. But primary purpose was to see if I could make the whole process work. Mount MDVR, take video, upload video post. So at least we can go through the motions. Will try again and work on better quality.

I'm trying to use youtube video editor ... had been using movie maker ... but I notice this video does not have the "HD" atribute beside it that all my prior videos had. So lack of "HD" is probably part of the reason the video quality is low. Haven't been able to find the "HD" button in youtube editor yet.

Goal: Check 5.56, 7.62 and .22LR at 100yds.

Environment: Light rain, mud.

Equipment: 5.56 with VO 1-6x, FLC XM193, sling, 7.62 with L&S 3-18x, AMAX 168, sling, .22LR with EOTECH w/ 3x, Eley Edge, sling, primos trigger stick. LRF, canteen. Wet suit top, Muck boots.

Activity: Went and setup targets at a spot about 200yds from the house where we carved out some clay and rock for another project thus creating a small 12 foot high berm which I occasionally use for 50-100yd shooting near the house. The ground near this spot is very mucky mud. But I setup my three sticks to hold the target board and setup a target. After setting up the target I think I gained 5 pounds on each foot due to the mud.
Then went and got 5.56 rifle, washed off mud with hose.
Went lased 100yd firing point. This group was high. I removed the elevation turret and cranked down 1 mil, 5 clicks on the 0.2 mil per click turret. I'm not sure where this scope was zeroed, maybe 30yds, maybe 50yds. But I want the 5.56 zeroed for 100yds right now. I had the SPW556 suppressor on the 5.56.

G01 - 5rds, 100yds, 7+6+5+5+0 = avg 4.6

Then fired 5 more rounds.

G02 - 5rds, 100yds, 10+10+9+9+7 = avg 9

82nk0LXh.jpg

I might be a tad bit right.

Then took this pic and then patched the targets (a muddy affair) then went and got 7.62 rifle have to hose off boots even to go in the mud room where I had staged my gear. I had been cranked up to 500yds. So looking at AB (Allied Ballistics) program, I needed to crank down 3.9 mils to get to 100yds. So I cranked down 3.9 mils. Adjusted parallax. I was using 3-18x scope on 12x my now standard setting since this works well for the COLR under most conditions and hence it is fine out to 600yds day or night on my land. This was also the first shoot with the new Harvester suppressor which is significantly lighter than the SPW556 suppressor I run on the 5.56 and .22LR rifles.

G03 - 5rds, 100yds 10+10+9+9+7 = avg 9

yWVZDHYh.jpg

I called this good took this pic and then headed back for the .22LR ... I moved the SPW556 suppressor over to the .22LR. With the EOTECH on this rifle I am zeroed at 30yds. So I knew I would have to hold up. Also with the breeze at 90 degress off the bullet path, I would hold some for wind. So my aiming point was 1:30 o'clock on the edge of the black circle.

G04 - 5rds, 100yds 9+7+7+5+5 = avg 6.6

I could actually see the first round hit to the right of the black circle, but continued to aim at the same spot for all rounds. If my aim is off, the rounds are off as well!

sJmhaVmh.jpg

Results: A lot of clomping back and forth through the mud. Getting near the target would add a lot of mud to the boots. Each time I returned to the house, the mud room, I hosed off my boots. Every place is slippery, some places are more slippery than others. The .22LR needs to be cleaned. No second round fed correctly. Two rounds jammed and had to be replaced. I also had one "inadvertant bump fire" of a double. I must have put my bore snake in a good safe spot, I can't find it. I will have to order another. Make that two ... as two is one. In the mean time I can still clean. As most (if not all) of you know, the .22LR type rifles need to be cleaned more and mine is no exception. These rifles are all good to go at 100yds. The .22LR remains zeroed at 30yds. In the summer the vast majority of my shooting will be standing up as the grass (hay) in the pastures is already chest high in some places and will be over my head in some places before it is harvested. Not many spots to shoot prone. So we shoot standing up. The primos gen2 trigger stick is a game changer as it can be setup and adjusted with one hand and seems to increase precision and accuracy. I will also practice without it, but when confirming zero I will practice with it.

This board doesn't seem to allow posts with more than 5 images ...

Here is the sixth image of the .22LR I had to remove to get the above post to post.

Hopefully there is some benefit to the restriction!

if you would use photobucket you can post as many as you care to

I used to use photobucket for stills and video but then it got too "ad-y" so I switched to imgur for stills ... and youtube for video ... maybe this site has decided to allow more than 5 images for photo-bucket onluy... but I would recommend allowing for imgur and youtube also.

what are you doing uploading direct to LSB from the upload a file? That should be the only one that limits you as it uses bandwidth and bandwidth costs

Negatif, I'm uploading directly to imgur for stills and uploading directly to youtube for video. Just like when I used to use photobucket I uploaded directly to photobucket.

That is interesting, I have never used imgur so have no clue as to how it works w forums, but I have no limits w photobucket hosted pics

imgur works just like photobucket. Call it "photobucket II" ... the only difference is people were complaining about photobucket showing them advertisments when clicking on my images (not LSB people, but people on other forums) so I switched to imgur and the advertisement problem was solved. I can live with the 5 image per post limit at LSB, I just forget about it sometimes as I don't often need more than five. Hopefully there is some benefit to LSB for having this limit for everyone except photobucket!
