Caliber question

I asked my wife if she would like to go hog hunting with me next spring/summer and she said yes. The problem is, she had shoulder surgery a while back. It's completely healed, but she's still recoil sensitive. She can shoot 223 with very little discomfort, so what would be the best round to use? Also, would this be a good excuse to get another caliber? Is there anything out there that has a light/mild recoil but provides more punch?

Last thing, what's a good round for 308? If 223 is her option, I'd probably use my 308.

Thanks.

6.8 Spc II is a light recoiling rifle in an AR platform. Mine has next to nothing with a suppressor and thermal on it.

I love bad influences! How does the recoil compare to 223? I know you said "next to nothing" but have you done a side by side?

If you have a good setup for head shots a .17 super mag would be fun. I have one in a bolt gun for my wife. Would like to have that AR by Franklin Arms that Lawman did some videos with earlier. No kick, like a .22 really.

What Dan said 17 wsm, for head shots. There are also a bunch of good hunting rounds for the 5.56. Personally I like Hornady. I've killed 10 or more with my single shot .223 and a Hornady lead tip.

If you have a .223 and she feels comfortable with it, then use it. I like the Barnes bullets. Lots of hogs have been killed with a .223. Larger bullets kill easier, but you can certainly kill them with a .223.

I’ve got a buddy that only shoots 223 for hogs and he kills at least 100 yearly. He uses Black Hills ammo with the 60g Vmax. However he Day hunts only and is amazing at putting his bullet right behind the ear.

Also there is quite a few things that can be done to reduce felt recoil. JP Enterprises silent captured buffer spring-heavy version in unison with an adjustable gas block. You can dial the gas down to really slow down the bolt cycling. My 6.8 with this setup recoils less than my daughters 22.

The heavier captured buffer spring will slow down the action by sheer force, heavier spring will dampen how hard the bolt is slamming rear wards. The adjustable gas block can cut off the gas flow completely, not allowing the rifle to cycle, or can be full opened allowing the rifle to cycle at much higher speeds, or anything in between. The suppressor will increase back pressure so adjusting the gas block for less flow fixes that issue.

6.8 is the perfect gun and caliber for hogs, deer and varmints..almost NO recoil and it kills what it hits

My suppressed 6.8 has roughly the same recoil as my unsuppressed AR-15 .5.56 firing 65gr bullets. In fact I just fired them side by Friday for an older gentleman asking the same question. Now my 6.8 with suppressor, thermal and brass catcher comes in around 11lbs vs around 7lbs for my AR in .223

Any guess what your 6.8 would be naked? I'll be running a suppressor and thermal as well, curious if there's a big weight difference in 6.8. It's just a different barrel, bolt, and magazine, right?

Yes, just a different barrel bolt and magazine. It's about 6.5lbs. It has a 16inch barrel and a light weight free float tube.

If it's for her to come along and maybe kill a single here and there I'd highly recommend a 22. One of the guys on our lease uses a suppressed Ruger 10/22 with subs and kills every one he shoots at and quietly I Might add so it doesn't blow up his deer hunt for the day, but they are head shots and he usually just gets one and then they all leave. If it wasn't such a PITA with the stamp I'd have a suppressed 10/22 with me on every deer sit.

I'd be nervous about taking a 1st time hunter out with a .22 simply because it's too easy to lose a hog due to a misplaced shot.
Remington makes reduced recoil ammo for .308 which might be worth a look

6.8mm as other have stated. It has zero recoil in an AR platform and plenty of power to take down any size hog.

What would you know about recoil with a 10 ga shotgun and elephant guns in your safe? I really do not see much difference from a 556 to a 6.8 in recoil, a 44 mag carbine is much worse or my 12 ga too
