So... Been an insanely busy few months for me, I had a record year last year for personal overtime at work, like I would be happy to only be working 80hr weeks...
Anyhoo, got today off, its my 3rd day off since Christmas day, so I decided to be lazy and hang out at the house with my 3 year old daughter. We play hard all morning, feed chickens and check cows from the barn roof (been raining here and I didnt feel like getting stuck), split a little wood, and bbqed some hamburgers for lunch.
Well she went down for a nap around 1pm, and i changed back into some pjs with every intention of napping the rest of the day.
I was just getting comfy on the couch, my wife was relaxing next to me, when our driveway alarm goes off. The brush rabbits set it off all the time, so not a big deal, but i decided to get up and check in case it was someone pulling in.
It wasnt a car, but a skinny coyote at a dead run after my best laying hen!
Of course, I being the smart feller I am had put my rifles up before changing, so I grabbed my G19 out of the bedside box and run outside to handle business.
Being half delirious from exhaustion I forgot to take my glasses off (Im far sighted and got the new pair just a couple weeks ago) before taking the first shot at the dog as him, the hen, and my rooster are all making laps around a 5 gallon bucket.
Well I sure killed that bucket good. The second and third shots hit him in the guts ( i was shooting at him from about 20 feet), I am proud to say that the 4th, 5th, and 6th didnt hit a chicken or my truck....lol The 7th hit him, and I killed some dirt with the rest.
Ill be dammed if that dog was acting like he was worried at all, annoyed maybe. He trotted over to the fence hopped out of the yard and went off into the vineyard.
My wife watched the whole thing from the porch, the first thing she said to me was "Nice shooting, why did you waste the ammo? You might as well have asked him to leave." Thats when I realized that I still had the glasses on.
After checking on the birds (lost one hen), truck (no holes!), and my pride(broke a cardinal shooti g rule AND had less than a 50% hit rate at less than 15yds), I started hunting for evidence that I actually hit the dog like i thought i had. I did find some blood, so, pride was ok-ish.
Moral of the story, 9mm barnes 115gr bullets dont make much blood, cant hit things you cant see ( glasses!), and I need to start parking next to the shop...
