How does this trap work?

I salvaged an old pig trap and have no idea how it works. I have to straighten out the cage and the door and hinge seem to work. There was some old rope in it and I gather rope is used to set the trap?Trap.JPG Trap2.JPG Trap3.JPG Trap.JPG Trap2.JPG Trap3.JPG

Looks like it's standing on its' back end. What is at the top in the photos is the door. Looks like a swinging door, I think I see a spring to pull and hold it closed. You just need to prop it open and configure a trigger to release it once hogs get in. preferably setting the trigger to the rear of the trap to ensure a hog is all the way into the trap before the door attempts to close.

Or, have I missed the point of your question entirely?

Yes, its standing on the back end. So is the concept the pig walks in pushes the rope with his leg moving forward and the rope triggers the spring and the door shuts? So you string the rope so it is a few inches off the bottom of the cage, near the back? And should I use corn as bait and put it in bowl in the back?

If it's possible, I'd run the trigger rope over the top of the trap toward the back, then bring it inside the trap to whatever mechanism exists or can be rigged to release the door. My opinion is that it's best to lure the hogs to the rear of the trap. That way you don't risk releasing the trap while a hog is only halfway in (preventing the door from closing), at which time they will likely back out and vamoose!

On the subject of luring hogs to the rear of the trap, I suggest baiting the trap all the way in. Don't just put bait at the rear by the trigger, or you risk having a young hog rush in and immediately trip the trap. By baiting the entire length of the trap you can sometimes get multiple hogs to come in before one wanders to the rear to trip the closing mechanism.

Free is good, but it looks a little battle worn. A 200 may beat his way out.

You should PM ol' Rattlesnake Dan...he's a mighty welder and I hear he refurbs traps for $10 (travel included).

Looking forward to watching the saga unfold.

To be clear, my concern was not the structure’s ability to trap a hog.

It was the ability to HOLD the aforementioned beast.

I will admit, I have seen the ugliest cobbled together traps you can imagine full of hogs. I used to get a lot of calls to come get trapped hogs from people's places and would laugh at the setup. Maybe the hogs weren't intimidated by their creations?

Might be easier to get 3 or 4 wire panels and some t posts. Use the gate trigger mechanism off that trap. Just an idea.

When you lay it flat tie a small sash cord type rope to the top of the door that runs across the width of the trap (short side) and out one of the squares. Make the rope a hair over double the width of the trap. Basically when the door is shut, your rope and snap should still be outside the trap by a foot or so. Tie a brass snap on the end. Use that rope to pull the door open, snap it open, and snap it closed if need be. Just pull the rope toward you and run it to the back of the trap until the door is wide open. Snap it to the nearest part on the panel.

Take some of that dark green or black string like you use for trot lines and tie it to the bottom corner of the the trap. Run the string outside the trap, just like you did with your rope but at the bottom, and along the side of the trap to the back corner. About 2' or so from the corner go back thru the trap and aim for about 2" along the back wall of the trap. Take some stiff slick wire and make a loop on one end for you string to tie to. On the other end bend a 90 deg hook in it. Hook that hook in to the back wall as close to the bottom as possible. You adjust how hair trigger the tripe wire is by how much bend you put in the hook.

Once you get it hooked on the back wall. Go back to your rope and unsnap it. Slowly give the rope slack to be sure your hook is holding the door open.

If you catch pigs the first thing you do when you walk up is secure that door. You jump out and walk right to it and tie it shut with rope, snaps, zip ties, or some thing. Every second you waste is a chance they can hit that door and potentially pop it open.

As always, corn for as long as you can stand it before you actually set the trip wire. Never set the trip wire 2 nights in a row. You will also want to cut that floor out or cover it with dirt to increase your odds.

Good luck

I got it working. A real pita to move around. It is solid and I added some tighter thick wire fencing to close it up. I’ve caught a few piglets but the big ones just look in the door. I’ll keep moving it around.
