Just pulled the trigger on an IR Patrol

Louis have you called NCS, Ident, or Third Coast and told them your wants? I have a feeling you're gonna keep buying S and finding it's not what you want.

I think I'm just going to keep the patrol as my full-time scope on my Colt ar. I just bought a quad rail for it and it's starting to look like an octopus...

I have one ar, my bushy, which has absolutely nothing on it but a flashlight. That's my bare minimum. My other has my 3 x 12 optical on it. And of course my Colt which has everything on it.

The colt has a new quad rail with a Fenix 900 lm flashlight with remote switch, IR flashlight, IR laser and vertical fore grip with integrated bi-pod. Plus a slew of aftermarket add-ons, such as a Geissel SSA-E trigger, BCM oversized ambidextrous charging handle, Wilson combat bolt release, Ordin mag release, limb saver butt pad, Ergo handle. I think that's about it...

I have short hands and short fingers and I try to get everything extra big an oversized to make it easy for my fumbling fingers.

That's my true "everything gun" that if I had to choose one... The truth of the matter, is I am leaning back full circle to my bushmaster, which is bare minimum. It's really all you need if properly trained in the use of iron sites. For daytime use. Even for night time, I could simply put my IR laser on it with my helmet and mod three goggles and do quite fine with it I'm sure for almost all night encounters.

My colt is not as heavy as I thought it would be and I like having everything that I need on one weapon. So the only thing it could possibly lack is an optical scope. Which is why I was thinking about clip on use with the patrol.

Honestly it's really hard deciding which rifle I like. As I said, coming back full circle to nothing. There's something to be said about nothing. Just an AR with iron sites and some mags. Simple and requires no thought.

It only gets complicated when you add in night vision equipment.

Truth be told, I function under the thought process of " hope for the best, prepare for the worse"

I don't really want anything to happen to this world, but unfortunately, I doubt seriously that will have any affect on whether or not it happens.

I would say it's right around the corner, but that's been predicted and prepared for many generations before mine. Every generation thinks this is the generation its going to happen.

So until that time, I consider this my hobby and nothing more. It keeps me busy. And I have three rifles that offers it all. Minimal, midway and overkill. And if something happens? I hope to be a couple of more steps up the ladder than the guy below me :)

When it comes to being prepared, I'm definitely a few steps above the rest. Year plus supply of food for many people, water (bottled) plus water filtration equipment good to tens of thousands of gallons, gigantic medical supply (including a slew of different types of antibiotics and medications) I lack nothing. If you name it, I probably have it. I've been a prepper for 15+ years, back when it was called being a survivalist and nobody even heard the term prepper.

As far as the supplies end of it go, short of a government facility, I don't know many people that have the quantity and variety of what I have as an individual.

That's the core of my prepping. What I lack SEVERELY is field use. None of this fancy equipment is going to matter if I'm not prepared physically and or qualified to use the equipment and supplies I own!!!

And it's foolish for me to make any decisions about what rifle set up I like the best, until I actually get out there and use the rifle. Staring at my guns will do little in helping me decide.

Now that I have bought this house, I hope to enter that phase. To train nightly and constantly.
Then and only then, will I really be able to choose the set up that I like the best and make decisions regarding scopes.

Lol I like the fact that they point out how its 23 lbs and has 270 rounds "on board" and then his finger gets so tired trying to dump all those mags he slows down so much shooting by the end, lmao!

Louis,

A dedicated night rifle with the thermal is the way to go, imo, and the Colt is it.

I would suggest moving the IR laser to the Bushy with just the iron sights, then you have a bare minimum day or night rifle, at night for use with your Mod 3's. Imo, the IR laser on a rifle with a thermal is tits on a bull. Same with the IR light.

Regarding the IR light, I would suggest that you put one on your helmet. I also think T-20 works best either as a hand held light for use with NOD's or rifle mounted in conjunction with a dedicated NV scope or a PVS 14 behind an EO Tech or Aimpoint, etc. You can find a small zoom able 3w one AA IR light in Amazon which works great on a helmet and mounts in any cheap 1" Weaver ring for about $10. I'll post a photo when I get the chance.

Set up the way I suggest, you have redundancy. Two rifles that will work in daylight, and two that will work at night. Two is one and one is none... A day and a night back up, or two standing guard day or night...

Also, as you will discover when you have the opportunity to get out and use your gear, NV cannot compare with thermal for spotting or IDing or shooting targets in the dark. Unless the terrain is flat and/or cover less the shear number of living creatures you will NOT spot with NV that you will spot with thermal will amaze you. I would estimate that a good 75-80% of warm blooded creatures are missed when using NV versus thermal. Missing, say, a deer or a raccoon if you are out and about training with you gear may not seem significant, but if what you seek to be prepared for comes to pass, it might be a two legged vermin, or it might be your next meal. And as we have discussed, a thermal's usefulness for spotting targets does not end with sunrise.

My thoughts,

sorry for derailing the thread, and thanks for getting it back on track JPK. I dont have tons of experience, but i have thought and learned a lot and used the stuff enough to understand every aspect of what JPK just said and agree with it 100%

Ha! No issues with me. I love parodies of the tacticool ARs with everything and the kitchen sink too. And the ISIS Urban Night hunt vid was a hoot too!

Louis,

Here's a photo of my helmet with the small 3w IR light, mounted with a cheap Weaver style ring. [The heavy counter weight, two loaded 6.8 magazines, is to offset dual PVS 14's mounted to an IC bridge.]

Now that you said it JPK, it just makes total sense. First off, putting the IR flashlight on my helmet is win-win, as it's available for absolutely any weapon I choose to use. I like that advice a lot. And I think I will get a another IR laser for the bushy. Making that a very simple and light weight both night and day use. I like that a lot too.

But I think in hunting, what you said about having both the IR laser and patrol is redundant is correct. But if you think about it, in a tactical situation, I don't think it is. The reason I have it on the Colt was for quick shoot and acquisition.

Because my MOD three is being used to actually move and walk around, I asked myself what if I came upon an enemy target immediately?

So this way I could just raise my rifle from the hip position with the laser and shoot. Versus having to transition from spotting my enemy with night vision, taking my night vision goggles and flipping them up, reacquiring my target with the patrol and shooting. Way too slow for an immediate threat.

For any kind of a still target no doubt about it that's the way to go and is redundant. But what if I'm walking down the trail and and suddenly came around the corner and right there in front of me is a threat?

I like knowing that I don't have to bring it up to the eyes and can just shoot instantly from any position. :) also, what if I'm pinned down and I don't have an opportunity to actually look thru my scope. To say that I can just raise up my weapon over my cover, or around a corner and shoot from ANY position using the laser versus having to put my head behind the scope to line up.

I think having both is a definite advantage as to me, the primary advantage of a laser has always been being able to shoot holding the rifle in absolutely any position and shooting from absolutely any angle. That is one thing the patrol cannot do for me, as the only shot I can take is when I am looking through it :)

I understand what you are saying regarding the laser on the Colt, with the thermal, and it sounds like a good idea. But I will point out again that you will end up relying on the thermal for night detection.

For quick use of a thermal scope with a NOD, the best way I have found, so far, is to be wearing a single NOD over the eye which you don't shoot with. Then you can scan or shoot with thermal without moving the NOD. I like dual PVS 14's mounted on an IC bridge because the bridge allows me to swing the PVS 14 over my shooting eye out of the way for scanning or shooting with thermal. (But when I hunt at night here in MD I am usually stationary, calling to predators, and most frequently swing the NOD's up and just use thermal to spot and to shoot.) With your Mod 3's you can take one pod off for scanning or quick shooting.

I tried a T-20 helmet mounted, and for my purposes it was too large and heavy, and had more capability that required; but you might find that it works fine helmet mounted, and all you have to do it swap from the Colt to the helmet.

I wonder if in 200-300 years, after the apocalypse, cyber historians will reconstruct this thread from digital artifacts, and piece together the genesis of Louis' two rifle system.......that saved humanity. Brian you'll obviously be painted as the villain. But will they acknowledge the guidance of JPK, or redact the record and erase his contribution entirely? Wish I had a bigger part.

If, or when?, the SHTF, and you face a Ferguson or Baltimore local situation, or a broader situation wrl - perhaps becoming more likely by the day - it could become you and yours and your preparation against all comers.

I live maybe 50mi from ground zero in Baltimore and a whole lot less from similar neighborhoods in DC, maybe five as the crow flies from where the Hispanic Iraq veteran Marine was beaten and robbed by "black lives matter" thugs in DC Wednesday. I can see the day coming when I'm bugging out or defending in place. If you had told me I'd say that seven years ago I would have asked where you kept the tin foil.

Btw, I am not a prepper, just an observer of how f'd up our country has become, especially the liberal urban areas.

See taco, that's why you'll go down in history without a bigger role. No one can take u seriously! (Says the guy posting parody YouTube videos and provoking jokes about 300 AAC). At least we'll die laughing though right!?
