Article is from 3 years ago, every entity that I know of that has tried that has failed for one reason or another. But it would be great if someone could pull it off. I believe the liability is a large hurdle. Blame the lawyers.

It isn't just liability but expense. It costs quite a bit of money per hog to have it caught, transported to the processor, inspected, butchered, refrigerated, and distributed. Who pays for all that "free" meat?

Those guys on the heli show drive around with a refer trailer and pick up the porkers and butcher them all by their lonesomes and then take the meat to people that need it. I do think that is dang nice of them to donate their time, materials, labor, and everything else that is involved to help out the folks that are doing without!! GOOD ON THEM!!
Also like Lancer stated that is a very old article. On a side note,,, you know if the corp is in anyway part of it it is going to be a mess!! I have had to many dealings with them and know people that work for them and I scratch my head wondering how and why??:)

If you are talking about Heli-hunter that's where I got my info on the liability, they have stopped doing the meat thing.

That is because it may be ILLEGAL to distribute non-inspected hog meat to the public in Texas and the hogs have to be brought in live before butchering.
In Texas, where can I donate feral hog meat that I do not plan on consuming? - eXtension

Mostly, it turns out, because it is illegal to donate feral pig meat to needy folks, or to anyone else, without following a specific process. - See more at: Whole Hog - Texas Monthly

So if the helihunters want to have a big BBQ of the hogs they killed and invite a few hundred of their homeless friends to their property, that would be okay.

Donating the uninspected before-killed hogs to the food bank, does not appear to be legal.

Is "hogs for a cause" still around? I think they were based near Austin.

At one point I think they were giving the meat to their "friends" and the ranchers that wanted some. That is what I remember them saying last fall/winter. And,, they had a couple big BBQs. BANG BANG!!
