I was out scouting some trails yesterday afternoon about 2:00p when I rounded a bend and came up on a couple of hogs 75 yds away in a clearing. I was carrying shooting sticks, a pad to sit on and had my Ambush slung over my right shoulder. I was down wind from the hogs and they clearly saw and smelled me at the same time, but instead of running off like I expected, one sow's protection instincts kicked in and she started moving towards me cautiously. Needless to say my own protection instincts began to kick in as I had no place to run. In the process of dropping all my gear and slinging up my rifle and dropping down to one knee, she closed to within 30yds. Luckily my scope was set on 4x and it wasn't too difficult to find her and line up a shot. The 120sst hit her full on in the right chest and she still jumped straight up and reared up on her hind legs before dropping dead about thirty feet away. It took me a while to collect my thoughts and realize that there must have been some piglets nearby and I was very lucky that she didn't charge me at full speed because she'd have won that race for sure. Anyway it was an epic moment that all true hunters live for and I'd give anything to have it on video. She was just a 120lb nursing sow, I'll never know how many others were with her watching and laughing at me.
