Once again with over 1000 acres of hay fields to hunt, the only activity I've seen in the last week was on the neighbors property next to the one easement road. Last Sat I decided to sling soured corn along the edge of the road to see if the stink draws them in. I made my rounds once the sun went down and headed up to the road at 11 pm.

Sure enough they were in the neighbors hay field, which I don't yet have permission to hunt. After watch them root around the same spot for 45 min 300 yards out, I called it a night and headed home to bed.

I checked the bate spot in the morning, and sure enough they eventually found it. I bated it up again sunday night, and monday night I added a game cam to capture the action. Sure enough they were hip on the free meal, and hit the bait site just after 9:15 Monday night.

After spending the entire day Tuesday excited to go out and have half a chance at seeing a sounder, I called Lonepunman at 7 pm and asked if he could make it out before 9 pm. I knew I would only be able to take one shot before they retreated back into the hayfield so I was hoping a 2nd shooter would at least make for a double.

Brian arrived right at 9 pm and we got setup in the back of the suburban by 9:10. He had used my thermal a couple times before so it didn't take long for both of us to get powered up. I got the Tikka & Photon NV as a 2nd weapon for night hunting. This was my first opportunity to hunt hogs with the NV scope.

All of a sudden it was like someone rang a dinner bell. We hadn't been in the truck 5 min. Brian said they ran to the bait site. 8 to 10 of them were all feeding on one spot even though the corn was spread out over a 25 foot strip along the edge of the road. Other then the occasional set of eyes looking towards us for the most part all I could see was a large blob of black all munching on the corn.

Brian and I talked back and forth for a couple of min about what I see and if I have a good target. Of corse they are moving around the whole time. Once I say I have a good target he says "OK don't shoot, were going on 3 2 1 fire, then without taking a breath he says 3 2 1..... I shoot. Why Why Why did he repeat himself? He says why did you shoot? Of corse I cant see a thing with the Photon, He clicks off the safety and takes a shot at one that turned back at the road.

Once we piled out of the truck I checked for anything on the ground. Nothing!..... Nothing Nothing Nothing. Dang. Brian has his thermal mono in hand and is already walking towards the bait site. It didn't take long for me to catch up. I was a little unsure of the exact spot they were feeding, but with flashlight in hand I spotted a large blood splatter, then another and another. It was on. The blood trail was great and heavy. It only took a few min to walk to 80 or so yards to the spot the young boar had dropped.

Not our first time hunting together but we had new lessons to learn.

Cool story! It takes a little time to get the routine down when hunting with someone else.

that countdown can be tricky, especially when the hogs are moving and the sight picture changes between counts. but when the countdown man gets to '1', it's on!!

From the photo it looks like you have some dandy hogs in there. Heck fire ask your neighbor if you can help him save is crop/s/hay field? The worst he can say is NO and get the hell off my porch!!:) Nice going guys! BANG BANG!!

Cool beans. I'll second the comment about taking some time for two guys to get in sinc.

Might want to try a T-20 IR light with the Photon. With a tall 1" Weaver ring it will mount on the Photon. The T-20 has two power levels, the lower would work. Use the Photon with the lens cap closed but the centerpiece punched out.

If you search you will find some pointers I gave to another member on optimizing the Photon's performance.

We've had good luck in the past. A couple of times the timing was so close it only sounded like one shot, and we would ask each other "Did you shoot?"

Congrats on the hog and first for the tikka! I just got a tikka .270 not too long ago ... haven't shot it much but like it so far. It's light and the trigger is pretty sweet. Bastrop, Tx? I'm in Austin!

OK… A couple of things.

First off, this outing was nowhere close to being a "hunt". Far closer to a Mossad assassination from a mobile sniper hide.

Slim's truck, set up and bait placement and timing were perfect.

His recounting of events is actually fairly accurate. We've hunted together multiple times in several locations and previously start with a pregame safety, equipment and procedure review.

In this particular instance, my walk out into the wild consisted of in relocating from the front of my vehicle into the back of his.

We usually perform a synchronized shoot with a "3 2 1" count, firing on the anticipated zero in that cadence. The shooter with the technically weakest shot performs the count; because I use night vision and he has thermal, it's usually me.

This technique is typically successful. In fact, during a hunt last winter it sounded like a single round being fired went to hogs were dropped at two different locations. This makes perfect sense, because in reality only one shooter actually sent a round downrange to drop the the hog. (He knows why).

That said, I have posted
