About 15 years ago, had a cousin come over for dinner. We go out onto the back porch to light the grill, I open the lid, and find a rat chewing on the grill grates ! Slammed the lid and hustled into the house to get my pellet gun. Had my cousin open the lid after I had a bead on the inside of the grill, he swings it open, and the rat is tail-up trying to get out the back side of the gas grill. I plugged his sorry ass in his gut (not my cousin, the other one)... and his tail drops and goes limp.

Yes, dinner was still on. Yes, the gas grill cooked dinner (but, with a SERIOUS pre-heating to sterilize it). No, we didn't cook our kill, into the trash he went... "summa udda kinda meat" was not on the menu.

Speaking of critters are grillin....I cooked the rear of a wild hog on my pit a couple days ago that I just built. I layed down a pound of bacon covered in brown sugar (the other brown sugar RD) and layed the hog on there, did the same to the top...3 hours at 275 with mesquite wood and wowsa, quite delish'. Any way that has nothing to do with the story other than I was chasing a possum a couple nights ago with a flashlight and a golf club, in shorts and flip flops, when I noticed the neighbors headed back inside, not sure what their problem was? Anyhoot, them toothy rats can run when they need to, so I got some of that smoked bacon, put it in a live trap and I hardly laid down in bed when I heard the door slam closed. Pellet to the brain bucket. The moral of the story is....not really sure but opossums love smoked bacon.

Anybody that does a write up on a dead rat and what kind of sling he used for killing said rat...needs some love.

Did we just sabotage Wiggy's practice section?

Not a chance ... second new toy has arrived !!

So question for all you Zeus experts ... as I've been a "clip on" guy up till now ...

With no reticle having "hash marks" ... if we have to hold for elevation or wind ... it seems like there will be a lot of guess work!! With the apollo clipon I could use the day scope reticle to hold.
The Zeus might be capable of 500-600yd shots under some conditions ... but it would seem the lack of a "reticle" is a major obstacle.
What am I missing !!??

Oh and that sling was a "Tactical Interventions Specialists" sling ... from Mike Miller in greater Oakland ... I think the specific model is "quick release" ... although I also have a "Vickers" on the 5.56(14.5) ... but all my other slings are TIS :)

Day time rat doesn't sound right...unless you are in India perhaps.

New thermal! Rats all over KS are wetting themselves.

Right, as I said this is the first "day time rat" I've seen on our land, except for the occasional specimen scurrying along the side of a building ... or into the weeds, near the bales or our spare dirt piles. But out in the open, this is the first. The only two ideas I've had are:
01 - Wife has been feeding Guineas "scratch grain" ... some of which remains on the back porch and in the drive way .. and rat was near the drive way, so he might have been trying to partake of the grain.
02 - One of our rat "poison" centers is also nearby, so he might have been visiting that place.
But why in the day? Not sure either theory really explains that. Yet there he was.

15 MPH S

Goal: 500yds with 556(18) and Thermal.

Environment: We've been up to 27 MPH from S or SE during the day, but the wind has died down a bit tonight. Partly cloudy but most star formations visible. There was a tiny bit of new moon setting during twilight. We are cutting and baling for the main harvest finally. The wind and sun have made the hay dry enough that we can cut and bale at the same time ... I at least have never done that before, but it makes sense under these conditions.

Equipment: 5.56(18), stick, bipod, FLC xm193 55gr, Zeus 3x 640(30), LRF, PVS-14 on helmet.

BcvXg9Sh.jpg

Activity: I had zeroed at 100yds during the day. So I started at 300yds. With about a third of the hay down I was able to go prone, though I had to manually roll a bale out of the LOS of the target. I didn't think I could roll a bale (I'd never tried before) but I was able to a few feet, enough to get it out of the LOS!

At 300yds the lay of the land would put the target too low, so I fired off the stick. Due to rounds previously fired out of these mags during the day, I had to do a mag change after the first round. The wind was variable between 7 and 12 MPH where I was standing 240 degrees off the bullet path. So I needed to hold about 7 inches left which I tried to do based on looking at the target. I still need to learn this "reticle". I cranked up from -10 to -8 as I had been a bit high at the end of the day session. I couldn't see the water bottle (it had been out there all day and was aligned with the temp of the background. But I could see the handwarmers as a glowing dot. So I had a 2 MOA group on elevation but was decently aligned on windage.

G01 - 2rds - 300yds - accuracy 3 inches precision 6 inches.

Then went to 500yds and cranked to -2 on elevation. The wind was averaging 12 MPH at the higher elevation, but was 210 off the bullet path So I put the center of the reticle to the left of the glowing dot. I was able to shoot prone bipod for this first time in months. I had harris 9-12 on 9 with no rear bag.

G02 - 2rds - 500yds - accuracy 1.5 inches, precision 2.5 inches.

U8KYvxRh.jpg

Well it doesn't get much better than that!

Tried again.

G03 - 3 rds - 500yds accuracy 7 inches, precision 2.5 inches.

i8ZjfD8h.jpg

I aimed directly at the handwarmers as the wind felt a little lower. I cranked the stock out 2 clicks, that was the only difference .. but it seems to have mattered a lot!

Summary results: At least the prone group sizes were decent. But I need a lot more practice with this "reticle" which has no hash marks. So holding for either elevation or wind will be a challenge. But I think I can make it work, if I practice.

12 MPH S

Goals: Test q-14. 5.56(18) at 500yds.

Environment: Windy, but highly variable, spiking up to 15 MPH, but averaging around 10 MPH with spells of 6 MPH. Some clouds, but milky way and several known (to me) constellations visible. The cutting/baling of the main pasture is now 90% complete ... and the second cut of the alfalfa patch as well. This is the one time of the year, I allow the light vehicles (buggy and 4-wheeler) to drive on the pasture during shooting practice.

Equipment: 5.56(18) with FLC 55gr, zeus 75mm 640(30), SPW556, harris 9-12 (9). LRF, PVS-14 on TW Helmet, kestrel, q-14 as handheld monocular.

Activity: Rolled out to the pond dam in the buggy. Got out with q-14. By holding it with right hand, exactly where it should be if mounted correctly, I do have "fusion" in the sense that the images are merged. I did this for 15m 3 times during the time I was out and headache inducement seems minimal, but not zero. I used the Sepia pallet. I think the "OEM Custom pallet in the Apollo I had and the Zeus I have now, would be better, but the q-14 doesn't have that one. Sepia is next best in terms of minimizing brightness variation induced headache for me. I will play with it some more to see if I can adjust the brightness down and bit further. Having the i2 image along side the thermal image greatly improves my confidence in moving at normal night speed. I saw a critter down in the high grass around the pond with the thermal but it was several feet into the grass and it was just an occasionally moving white fuzzy dot. I switched to WH when I spotted it. I saw two deer at about 50yds but they spotted me first and where moving away pretty quickly. Fawn and mother. I need to get the DVR working, but depending on how you mount the q-14 on the helmet, you need to mount the dvr rail on a different side of the q-14. So I just removed the rail so I don't have to keep moving it back and forth. Still trying to figure out if we can come up with an interface for the q-14 to mount it to my dual bridge and get it side by side with the pvs-14. But if we can, then this combo q-14 beside pvs-14 on dual mount, will be a winner for me.

Here is pic this morning of line of fire from 500yd FP to target.

xccM4lYh.jpg

I had to walk around and check from 5 different spots to find an LOF through the bales last night.

G01, G02, G03 are from previous night, so ignore those.

G11 is from last night:

G11 - 3rds - 500yds - accuracy - 2rds clipped the black circle - theoretical aiming point between the 2 handwarmers and one rd clipped a handwarmer. One round was a bit high. I was clicked to -2 on the Zeus reticle. Precision 5 inch group.

F2TO5fgh.jpg

Wind was from 190 off the bullet path at average of 11.8 MPH for 2m avg. I did not hold for wind.

Results: The Zeus continues to impress in terms of its ability to see and hit small targets at longer distances. With the Apollo I never tried at over 300yds. My Apollo was 336 and the Zeus is 640, the apollo was 42mm the Zeus is 75mm and the inherent optical 3x doesn't hurt either. The main issue is lack of a useful reticle. I'm trying the "cross dot" reticle hoping that the gap between the dot and the cross pieces can be used to hold and also that the lengths of the crosses can be used to hold. But with the wind behind me the last 2 nights have had to hold for wind yet. I should probably come in to 100yds and try to "calibrate" the reticle. I don't care what the "hash marks" might be - I could calibrate them myself, but it would be nice to have a reticle with some hash marks!

Mounting the handwarmers on both sides of the theoretical aiming point did not work out well. I could not see the handwarmers nearly as well as previous night when they were 50% stacked on top of each other. So when using handwarmers for 300yds+ thermal shooting I will do the 50% stack thingy again.

I am impressed. Especially with the lowly 556 55 grains, of course terminal ballistics probably aren't that great. But, I don't want you shooting at me with it.
