Lonepunman and I have had several opportunities to hunt together this last year. Many times we've been skunked, and there have been times he or I would get one. However we never had an opportunity to come up on a group that we could take a shot simultaneously. Well Thursday night was our night for the opportunity.
He was finishing his work day 15 miles from my hunting spot. Unsure what time he was done, I checked one field and got 2 boars by 8 pm. I got one into the back of the truck, and the 2nd to the edge of the field and i got the call he was on his way. After a min of greef I didn't wait for him I explained the main area I had seen 4 different groups Tues night had been left alone.
On my way to the main field I spotted him on the side of the road getting geared up and ready. I explained I would turn into and wait at the enterence for him, and see if any thing was in the first part of the hay field.
Once in and set up. It wasn't 2 min and 3 80lb sows and a few shotes poped into the field 150 yards from the road and started feeding on the edge of the hay field. What felt like hours passed, he finally answered the 2nd phone call. After a brief explanation of the situation he apologized for taking so much time to put his snake boots on. Lol
With guns in hand we begun our stalk, a whole 50 yards along the edge of our road, and set up for a shot. I use thermal he has a nv scope. The hogs were 10 feet or so on the back side of a small hill. With the 6 inches or so hay on The ground all he could see was the bounce back of the UV light on the hay and eye balls. My view was very clear so I suggested we switch so he could have a look. Now mind you he had made several trips out to the hay field without a single kill much less even a shot. Needless to say I was a bit frustrated. I simply said to him to take the shot from my gun. He said OK. 321 on shoot. OK. 321 shoot. I couldn't to this day say why I didn't pull the trigger, but what I heard was a simple click from my gun he was holding. I had forgot to work the bolt after the 3rd shot on the first group that night. I said reload. Would you know the hogs didn't budge. OK one more time. I was aiming at eyes on the right he at one on the left. 321 fire. Kaboom. It actually sounded like a single shot.
With the bounce back I was now blind. He said he saw the rest run back into the brush. With irrigation equipment close by we were only good for one shot. So we simply packed up and walked in to see what we got.
At the crest of the hill I spotted a shote on the right. Mine. Nothing on the left. Hmmm. Wait a blood trail. A heavy blood trail. OK off we go into the pasture. Not 50 yards in we find the sow and drag her back.
There are times it's great to spend half a night out and not see a thing. Then there are times you roll up in your truck, bag 2 in 15 min. Spend the next 3 hours butchering while chewing the fat. Just the same it was sweet to get our first double!
