New Grounds

After talking to this guy I've known almost ten years about his farm, he finally gave me permission to hog hunt on his property. It was funny how it came about. Two weeks ago I was in his shop just catching up on things and as I usually do, I asked if he was having any trouble with hog damage. He said yeah, those bastages have been tearing up his hay field again. I said "tongue in cheek" It's a shame you don't know anyone with night vision and thermal who could help keep them away for you. He just matter of fact, you can hunt there if you want to. BINGO!! Finally the words I have been wanting to hear. Last saturday I was able to meet him at the farm to get the tour and discuss what is fair game and what is off limits, etc. That night I went back just after sunset to get a lay of the land and look around after dark. As soon as I pulled in, he met me outside and said you are too late. I said what are you talking about? He said that just 10 minutes before I got there, a sounder of about 30 hogs came out in the pasture next to the house. He shot one with his .222 and said lets go check her out. I instinctively grabbed a handgun to take, "just in case". When we came up to her, she wasn't even close to death and wanted very much to either get us or get away. Fortunately, his round did enough damage to her spine just behind the shoulder to keep her from doing much more than lunge around. I was able to finish her off with a 200 gr. 10mm slug to the head. We didn't bother to do anything with her other than leave her for the TBPS. Unfortunately, I didn't see any more hogs that night, but have free run of the farm now when the family isn't there. (They don't live there, just weekends, etc.) I'm looking forward to having a lot more to write about in the near future.

It's only about 270 acres, but it borders a large waterway with a lot of swampy ground along the river and creeks. LOTS of potential, but the bugs are already bad. Can't wait to see what its like in the summer.

I haven't been posting much, but I have been getting out a good bit lately. Went to MS a couple weeks ago to turkey hunt for four days. No luck getting a turkey, but had several close encounters. I just couldn't close the deal. It was still fun to talk to them and have them respond and do their little dance around the pasture. Went quail hunting one day and had a blast shooting quail and chukar with my .410.

I got released by my Dr. a few days ago and told that I don't have any restrictions anymore. I'm still working on re-building my stamina. Its amazing how quick you lose your strength and endurance at my age when you sit on your ass for several weeks. I keep pushing myself to go farther, but sometimes its just easier to sit down and say "screw it, I'll ride the atv."
