Little Sow, Big Blood Trail Fades Quickly

I have noticed that the size of pigs at Elk Springs Ranch seems to be declining. I would like to believe all of the adults are gone, but I doubt that is the case, though I think most may be gone. Now it is a matter of killing off the little ones before they can reproduce.

Saw this small sounder of juvenile delinquent hogs and waited with the hopes of seeing an adult, but time ran out before I was about out of shot opportunities, so I went ahead and dropped one while I still could.

The shot blasted out the heart and left a significant blood trail that quickly cooled and all but faded from view inside of 1 minute.

As usual great vid. Right info given. Narriation was great. Extremely informative without the need for head bangin' "music".
Thank you for the vids. Stay at it sir. --- pruhdlr

Nice shot. Good example on the blood trail fading.

Thanks!!

I don't like the head banging music either. I think hunting is plenty hardcore without need the need for deathmetal music.

Nice shot. Good example on the blood trail fading.

Yeah, I thought my coyote vid with the blood splatter on the junker Suburban behind it made the point thermal wasn't normally going to be useful for following blood trails, but got several critical comments from folks (with some validity) that it was unrepresentative, metal cooling the blood too fast. No doubt the metal acted like a heat sink and sped up the process, but I think some folks were thinking that it cooled the blood in seconds that would have taken many minutes had it just fallen on the ground. It took me about 5 minutes to get to the hog. By that time, there was nothing on thermal to indicate that the hog had been bleeding, much less having done a blood dump after having her heart destroyed.

We've got the same situation where we hunt as far as size reduction. Just are not seeing the big ones as much as we used to.

Good video, as usual.
Interesting commentary on the blood trail, as well as regarding the size of the hogs. It'll be interesting to see if the larger ones are indeed mostly gone/killed or if they're in hiding from the killers who have come among them. I'm sure you'll let us know if they reappear.

Meanwhile, Keep After 'Em!

I did notice that there were some leafs on the ground and they hold heat also. So part of what was showing up on Thermal was turned over soil that was hotter than the night air. As with anything thermal if it does not have a constant heat source the longer it is exposed to something cool the more faint the signature will be and along with that the cooler the ambient air temp is out there and without a continual source of heat the faster it will disappear!! Skyence class is over for today!! Looks like you are thinning out the herd over there B, keep after them so they don't get ahead of you? BANG BANG!!

We have both kinds here Country and Western!!:) Will see if anyone gets that one??
