Always more to the story than that...

A good buddy invited me to join him at his old family property just north of Palastine for the weekend. Every time we're up here we see tons of ground turned over by pigs, especially in the open creek bed. However on so many trips they just don't come out for us, or we just didn't see them. This time at least this one hairy roto tiller decided to grace us with his presence.

We'd set up in a small fiberglass 8' box stand that I hesitate to call a two man stand. He and I both fit but for those that know me, I tend to take the share of about one and a half on my own... So we're bumping knees trying to not to make the stand sound like a bass drum. At least with both of us in it there was no chance of it swaying in the stiff wind that picked up after the sun went down. Our stand was up against the tree line at the creek. With the wind in our faces we had a commanding view of the wide creek bottom. It was about 300 yards to the tree line in one direction and almost 800 looking down the bottom until the reeds were so thick you wouldn't be see anything unless they set off a flare.

Once the sun slide over the horizon it got pretty dark pretty quick, the moon wasn't due out for a few hours and with as dark as the creek bottom was our I2 was damn near worthless for detecting anything unless it was right up close or at least within 100 yards. Now seeing terrain features... No problem, but we finally put the I2 away after a few scans with thermal. As usual, thermal showed all. After a couple hours of watching a handful of deer wander around in the areas where the trees gave a decent wind block, we finally had our first and only customer of the night come out.

We saw this pig come out of the tree line straight out from us at about 300 yards distance. There is a fence line about 50 yards closer too us than the tree line that has a few bushes in it. Not realizing the bushes that he kept putting between us and him were the fence bushes and not the under brush at the tree line kept throwing us off on our distance estimation.

Since he was the first pig of the night, we didn't want to take such a long shot. While waiting to see if any more would come out, we watched him for a while. He was a rooting machine, tossing good size dirt clods every which way the whole time.

Finally after coming to the conclusion that he may be our only visitor, I decided to stalk in closer. My buddy, cleared his rifle and used his Pulsar 38 thermal to keep an eye on the hog and me as I stalked across the creek bottom toward Kermit's brother in law. And by stalk I mean slog through some pretty swampy stuff, you know creek bottom and all....

Once I got on the ground I couldn't see the pig, so my buddy kept me abreast of the goings on around me using his thermal and relaying it to me over the radio. I managed to cover about 200 yards without falling on my ass or loosing a boot in the muck.

Side note: Rick, these Justin boots are great.

As I setup at what I think is about 100 yards from the roto tiller, I'm actually closer to 60ish.
He's still so engulfed in turning over the ground he never even stops to look around. I probably could have gotten within 10 feet if I'd have stayed down wind. But he didn't look like the snuggle type... So I set up on him, he quickly gives me his broad side and he locks up with the one shot to his neck and falls over in place. He didn't move so much as a foot, unless you count falling over.... Short curly shuffle and that was it, the 120 SST 6.8 did its thing.

At this point we're still hopeful he wouldn't be our only visitor, but after slogging back to the blind and a couple more hours there we pack it up. We drive the buggy over to check out the hog and spend way more time searching than we should have... Turns out it was almost 50 yards closer to the blind and on the opposite side of the interior fence line than we'd both thought.

No tape handy and he wasn't too big but he gave us entertainment for the evening....

Last pic is the exit wound.

I need to put it in the rifle case. I keep leaving it on the counter at home...
It was definitely not banner material so I wasn't too concerned. I'd estimate about 130ish pounds or so. This boy definitely wasn't starving.

Bet that shot dropped the pig in it's tracks.
It didn't move even a foot, unless you count falling over "moving".....

Some day pics from this morning. This chunk of undercooked bacon really was going to town rooting up the area.

We don't see many pigs on the property, unlike your videos showing them as thick as flies, but each one we've seen is doing major damage right in front of us!

Waiting to see if any more we're going to come out, I watched that guy toss large dirt clods for almost 45 min straight with no break. I swear he thought the field owed him money......

I convinced my bride to go hunting with me Saturday night, she only agreed because it was warm but I may have her hooked now. one of the first fields we pulled into she saw hot objects with the Pulsar hd19a, I looked and told her they were of the deer variety. She agreed but said she thought the ones to the right were hogs. I told her that was a rookie mistake; I've hunted with TLM and know for a fact that deer and hogs don't comingle. She was neither impressed nor convinced and wanted to stay and watch the group for a couple minutes. Well she was correct, there were 6 or 7 deer and 2 hogs all gathered together in one corner of the field. We stalked in on them and she got this nice boar with my 6.8 and Pulsar XD 38 from *******************. It was her first hog with a rifle.

That could've been an expensive outing, Does she want a standard *** barrel, or the new TRIAD barrel from *** on her new build? Congrats on the nice hog.

Great job Lancer. Now, lets see, a new rifle, thermal, ammo, and night vision gear. Yep, its going to be expensive. Maybe your boss will hire her as the new hog eradication foreman.
