Crazy day shooting Saturday night. We rolled into OK Saturday evening after a long drive. My father in law said the hogs were thick and welcomed my visit. As soon as the sun went down, I spotted a group of 30 or so a few hundred yards south of the house. As I was grabbing the 6.8, something spooked them and they headed in the opposite direction. I saw a very large boar heading East on what looked to be a course I could intercept. I set up on a large bale of hay and took a shot at about 100 yards. He took off into the creek with a couple of extra rounds chasing him. Round one to the hogs.
At 11 or so, I found another large group in the area where I engaged the big boar. Stalked in and took out a 100 pounder but missed the follow on shots.
At 5 AM I had two large groups. One to the west of the house had some huge sows but was on the other side of a streetlamp. One to the south had some smaller guys but an easier stalk. Hit that group and engaged at 100 yards or so with no hits. Could not believe my crappy shooting. I am rusty, but darn!!
Sunday was all day rain and all I did was move the one sow I dropped. Monday morning around 730, I see a coyote in the south field chewing on something. I engaged and dropped him and noticed he was chowing on a hog I didn’t see. Before I shot, I noticed two groups of buzzards. Turns out I hit a total of four hogs from the groups. As I am pulling them to the buzzard/coyote feed area, I see another group of buzzards by the creek in the woods. Turns out I hit the boar too and he made it to an area I couldn’t see. Boar was thick across the chest.
If I had arrived during the day, I would have noticed the south field was higher than usual and would have looked and prob found the four smaller hogs that first evening. I was also tired as hell after a 13 hour drive.
Anyway, at least I can still shoot. Wife joined me for the pig drag as we generally donate the hogs to the buzzards. You can see in the back of the polaris the pig that the coyote was snacking on, with the coyote underneath.
