you could have had 'live hunt' thread and kept us updated as it progressed... that is, until you fell asleep 30 minutes later :)

All right, here's your update: It was a good night, but not as productive hog wise as possible.

Shortly after the set up, I got a call from the property manager stating that he was going to be coming down for the weekend and would like to go on a night hunt with me if possible.

He is a very experienced deer and turkey hunter and a great guy personally. However, those of us who have guided guests with no experience with night hunting techniques or technology understand that it presents a unique set of challenges...

However, when you are fortunate enough to be have free run of 600 acres nine months out of the year with the gate only 45 minutes from your front door, when the manager wants to go night hunting...

you goes night hunting with him.

Shortly after sundown, I inserviced him on my Pulsar Photon - marvelously simple to operate and the fixed 4.6 is perfect for the max 125 yard shots at this set up. (Both of us with Mossberg 4x4 in .270 with Barnes TSX; mine is unhappily topped with the ATN XSight).

I had him working with the PS24 thermal and the Pulsar Recon 55R NV monocular when three young boars came down to the small hanging feeder - you can just see it between the two trees - that currently has mostly water underneath it. I had already baited up the shoreline with a bag of corn.

Wind was in our face, and the frog frat party allowed us to talk quietly without worries of spooking game.

The camera had shown that the hogs normally stay there until every last bit of corn is gone.

However...long story short, by the time he had finally got his rifle up and ready, the hogs spooked on something on our left and started to bolt back into brush.

They were only exposed at the edge of the marsh for about 30 seconds total.

When he didn't shoot, at the last second I ripped off a round at the last hog as he went into the thicket. (Pretty sure I hit him, but didn't find any blood later that night or in the morning).

About an hour later, there were three coons and six deer feeding on the other side, which gave him plenty of practice with both NV and thermal. I thermal spotted a boar well over 200 pounds coming down at about the 2 o'clock position. This time my partner had his rifle quickly ready (love the battery life and instant boot up of the Photon).

The boar, unfortunately, apparently had not scented or seen the nine creatures to his right, was startled and immediately trotted straight back into the brush. I hoped that he would return, but the way he got big was apparently through highly effective risk management techniques.

Shortly thereafter, my friend decide to call it a night and go back up to the ancient farmhouse.

I was disappointed that he didn't get a hog, but as is often the case in situations like this, the guest later said he was thrilled just to be out hunting and seeing critters in the black.

Next afternoon we spent a few hours hanging on the front porch – knocking back our chosen toxins (cigars for him, rye for me), watching the squall line come in.

I finally got the chance to rezero in the Husqvarna 30.06 that a previous guest had rapidly and inadvertently transferred from my truck to the ground (only in a soft case, of course).

And did some long overdue mending of my favorite hunting shirts. I really like Academy's Magellan line, but those buttons slide off quicker than a prom dress in a parked pickup.

Good tale there, shame nothing bled out for the trip to the freezer. But, goodwill hunts keep the opportunities alive.
