I decided to put out some corn to see if I could draw in some hogs to my deer stand. Nothing came in, it got dark so I started packing up to climb down 16 feet to the ground. I noticed I was missing a glove so I turned on my red led headlamp to see if it was on the ground beneath me. To my amazement this little critter was perched on my ladder about two feet from the ground! And he stayed put long enough for me to take my phone out and flash a couple of pictures.

What's really fun is when you are in a tree stand and they screech about 10' away.

That is a nighthawk. They perch more parallel to limbs and such, versus most birds that perch perpendicularly.

Cool pic. They happen to be one of my favorite birds.
I thought it was a screech owl

Oooh, maybe so. I was going from the coloration and stance, but the from the bulk, you may be right.

EDIT

Strangely, top-down pics of birds are not a common photo perspective, LOL. The tail and wing tips would appear to be a give-away along with the bulk. Screeches's tails come to more of a point and nighthawks are more open like scissors and wings more flattened to sides. Tail doesn't appear to be open and wing tips don't protrude.

Yes it was definitely an owl. It turned to look up at me and saw the way its eyes were set.

Had that happen to me floating down the cibolo creek on a dead still moon lit night... needless to say it took quite awhile for me to gather myself back together!
Happened at about 10 pm almost dozing off in my tree stand up on the San Marcos river, dreaming about hogs and just about came out of my boots.
