Bought some cracked corn by mistake. Thought I was buying whole kernel corn. I put the cracked corn down as bait and the hogs seem to just love it. I think the cracked corn has more smell to it so the hogs are attracted to it. I put down some cracked corn and an old boar was into it in 45 minutes. Your result may vary.
I have also learned not to put to much bait down at a time, a 2 gallon bucket at a time. The bait should be gone in 12 to 16 hours, if it isn't don't put down more bait. Seems like the hogs know the bait won't be there all day so they better get into it before it is gone. To much bait and the hogs seem to go "ho hum, I'll get it some day".
I have tried brewing up some stink bait and it doesn't seem to work any better than corn out of the bag. Corn on the cobb seems to work well. Tractor supply has a wild hog attractant that smells like liquorish, I tried it. Not sure if it works or not but worth a try.
If you know hogs are around, (game camera) but seem to avoid your bait, bury it in shallow holes. With bait on the ground surface the hogs seem to think something is wrong about it. They only know to eat they must root for food. But, they can't resist the cracked corn.
My game camera showed the hog showed up at my bait pile but left after a few minutes so I change the presentation. But with the cracked corn, there are hogs on the bait all night long until it is gone. Hope this helps
I won't be hog hunting for the next 3 weeks. I'll be back at it after Xmas.
