300 blk case damage

Yall know what would cause this?

New build, shot 20 rounds of factory Hornady ammo. Over half the rounds have gouges on each side of the primer. Hard to get a pic that shows the damage well. Gouges leave sharp edges that you can feel. Also, leaving brass shavings in bolt face.

Brass ejects at 3 o clock, throws it about 7 feet. Pistol length gas system, 16" barrel.

why pistol gas with a 16" barrel should be a mid gas...if carbine gas is harsh I can only imagine a pistol gas

I figured there were quite a few 16" barrel with pistol length gas for sale it must work.

I'm going to take a bcg out of my other rifle and run it in this one and see if it does the same thing.

Hmmmmmm . . . . does not look like the typical ejector plunger marks either.
Maybe marks made by the extractor . . IF . . the brass turned on the bolt face.
Could be marks made by a magazine. But only if the round traveled rearward after it's possible forward travel due to recoil. Maybe drop a single round into the chamber and fire it to see if it has these marks. Some mags hold the top round tight but the ones under it are somewhat loose. --- pruhdlr

Pistol length gas systems with 16 inch barrels is common for 300 BLK. It helps when using subsonic ammo.

So, I added a little weight to the buffer. Somewhat resolved the issue. Only marks 25% of the brass now instead of 75%. I did notice a lot less ping in the buffer tube.

Adjustable gas block is probably in my future.

Leaning towards over gassed. Didn't switch bolts to be sure yet. Will get that done this weekend.

Ejector marks. My 6.5 makes them on the soft Hornady brass. Just spin your brass a little longer then normal and it polishes them out. I'm on 5th run with the brass. No issues. Outside of annoying marks.
