One thing I kinda picked up from the Reap and looking at new Pulsar stuff was the stadiametric range finder. I just did a rough measurement using my crosshairs on a 4' board and noticed the shorter section matched 4' at 100 yards at 3x. Figuring most of the larger pigs I see are about 3' - 4' in length, I can get a decent range estimate. Im usually not taking a shot over 200 unless its been a really slow night. If nothing else it just gives me a bit of confidence knowing Im pretty accurate at 100-200 yards.

A TV screen is the same. However with a TV you usually have visual referances. With thermal/using thermal, your depth perception would be fine if you had visual referances. As with a normal rifle scope, looking out over the landscape, you have tons of visual referances as to your known size of things. A tree,a bush,a rock wall,a pond,a cattle tank,a water well,a hog, deer,or other animals.
You know the approximate size,so you know how far away they are. Or a animal is standing next to a stock tank with 30" sides. That gives you the referance to use to guesstimate the size of the animal or how far away they both are.
I have said for a long time now,a thermal with a built in rangefinder (laser,NOT stadia wire)would be worth it's weight in gold. --- pruhdlr
i've never seen anything too far to shoot atif we feel the need to know the EXACT range to our target, could it be we are attempting to shoot too far ?? --- pruhdlr
on my last hunt with goober he was scouting with the reap and told me to stop... something was out there.Always cracks me up taking guys out new to thermal and having them think a rabbit a 50 yards is a hog at 150 yards.
Lol being where you are I know you've got jackrabbits about like we do I bet. Last night I went out to check a few fields with a buddy and we kept falling for jackrabbits for a minute or two before they'd stick their ears up. He's got a ton of coyotes so thats what we would think they were from time to time.i've never seen anything too far to shoot at

i stop, get out and look for myself and there are two rabbits 10 feet away. i said do you really think a hog is going to be 10 feet from the truck?
We've all been there. I've stalked up to some cows in a neighboring field that looked like hogs in our field. Turned around and got back to the truck and had a hard time believing myself that they weren't pigs lol.I stalked an armadillo for like 20 minutes a while back.
