My interpretation is if you have 1000 pounds of energy when it hits the hog and doesn't come out he got the full 1000 pounds.

If it has 1000 lbs of energy when it hits the hog and passes through it took 600 lbs energy to make the pass through and the bullet has 400 lbs of energy still left in its flight trajectory.

This maybe a bunch of crap but that is the way I understand it.

i dunno if this has any merit, but...
if a ft lb of energy is the force needed to move a 1 lb object 1 foot, and u like to dump all the energy inside the hog by leaving the bullet there, then hasnt the energy reached zero when it stops?

if the bullet passes thru, hasnt it dumped more energy inside simply by traveling thru more hog and exiting with ft lbs > 0

and if the bullet has done damage (as opposed to pass thru from fmj for ex), then dont you have the best of both shock and damage
I agree DJ. I want my combo to dump all of its energy into the animal.

I will plug it into a ballistic calculator and see which has more energy at hog killin ranges. But I think no. All your energy blows out the other side and is wasted.

Easy . . . problem solved. If you want a bullet to simply do alot of damage and stay inside the hog . . ESPECIALLY for all you head/neck shooters . . . most any varmint style bullet will do.
A huge percentage of the bullets shot by you guys (and us guys) pass completely thru our targets,be it squirrels, rabbits, hogs, deer,or moose. For me . . . . . this is good. Do I "waste" some energy ?? Maybe, but I got a nice hole for the blood to exit thru.

This is super interesting to me I've always been a simpleton on ammo. I think mostly b/c from day 1 it was 'here shoot this .308' and I did and animals go boom and that was it. I think at a time in my life when it's all free time I'd love to experiment with reloading I enjoy tinkering.

Per your other comment: Did you do your adjustable gas block mod as a singular event or was it in tandem with other changes? I ask b/c while I don't shoot suppressed I have often wondered how much more I could tame the rifle with one. Don't really need to do it the pattern is fine, but I wonder how much it might soften the thump for a guy in his 80's. And I may get a suppressor one day too if it comes off the NFA bureaucracy anal exam list.

it's an interesting topic, not unlike the best bullet, or the futile efforts of trying to kill a hog with a 223 or wtf. i was actually hoping for an engineering type to present something more definitive.

i really don't care if it exits or not as long as it dies within view. if i want a big exit hole for a bleed out or a blood trail, then he's probably already gone. respectfully... gfy.

ps - i say that to all my friends

He doesn't hunt like us he doesn't understand. He does the whole kill one hog and go home thing.

I like the old pringles add. ONCE YOU POP YOU CANT STOP!

I like to smoke as many as I can and I want one bulett to bang flop hogs and yotes so I can kill more of them.
That was to point of my question about the 125 sst's at 308 win velocity

First 2 pics are 125 sst at 3000 fps

Second 2 are 150 sst at 2700 fps

The 125 wins in energy out to 200 yds

Yep! Everyone tells me it makes the rifle smoother if it has a adjustable gas block even without a suppressor. I only shoot suppressed now days especially since my hearing is shot out. When I started shooting AR's I started shooting suppressed because of the shorter barrel lengths.

Anybody run this combo? Results?
It's a great combo. I shoot the SST through my 7.62X39 AR's and they cause DEATH. You'll have more "juice" so not a problem.

As far as speed "kills". That is completely overstated. If you read the ballistic chatter, there are more people trying to keep bullets INTACT from speed, than those of us who shoot reasonable speed.
I always laugh when I body shoot pigs with my .264 Win Mag. It's pretty speedy. About 85% of the time the bullet (accubond) hits the opposite ribcage and stops. While my .44 mag lever gun is about 85% pass through with beautiful expansion. I am 48 years old and I can run faster than that 44 magnum is going.
All the pigs are dead - so speed works. But pigs are not ballistically friendly. Their body structure, heavy muscle, fat, and short solid bones act like a catchers chest protector.

You're going to be fine. Go kill some piggies!!

I'm not an expert, but this conclusion does make one assumption — that all bullets are equal in velocity and mass.
If one uses a bullet that carries 1,000 Ft-Lb of energy to the target, and the bullet penetrates 3/4 of the way through, it has indeed dumped 1,000 Ft-Lb of energy into that target.
But, if another shooter uses a bullet that carries 1,500 Ft-Lb of energy against a similar target, and said bullet exits, they've probably dumped more energy into the target even though their bullet exited.
The fact that a bullet did not exit is not an indicator that the bullet deposited more energy into a target than one which did exit, unless the bullets were identical in mass and velocity.
In other words, I'm not sure I'd want to slow my bullet down in order to prevent it from exiting.

Often slowing bullets down a bit gives deeper penetration. If the bullet is going fast enough to cause overexpansion or fragmenting then it's ability to penetrate will be compromised. I don't want my bullets to exit not because I want the hog to absorb every foot pound ( fine with me though) but so as not to have projectiles sailing off into the dark where I don't know what or where they will hit. My grendel pushing a 129 gr. Hornady spire point (2300 fps) will out penetrate my 270 pushing a 130 gr. Sierra BTSP (3000fps) on water jugs placed 100 yards out.

Could also show the 129 gr. Hornady is a tougher bullet than the 130 gr. Sierra BTSP. And yes I bet the Hornady bullet has a slightly better SD. Or it could mean that bullets that don't over expand penetrate deeper.

I've heard the ladies prefer expansion over penetration.... if only there was a bullet that knew how to start slow and end fast and explosive

SD is fine for certain animals, but I prefer the bullet stay in the hog. I prefer a light for caliber bullet for my night hunting.

Hello
I am interested in testing the 125gr SST on my 30-06 at approximately 3200 fs, in hogs (100 yards or so).
Has anyone tried it? Will it support that speed?
Thanks in advance
