With Deer season long over his efforts have increased at the lease in San Marcos. He made quick trip down to bait up a couple spots Friday night, and sure enough a sounder hit the tank alongside the dirt road 1/2 way in the property. A 2nd spot close by we call the ravine has also seen a fair amount of activity, and still had plenty of water left in the wallow. The 2nd tank 200 yards from the house has also been a hot spot for activity.
I was able to arrive to the property early. With 3 bags of corn and a shiny new 15 gallon steel roll barrel, It was my job to get the 3 spots baited up for the nights hunt. I elected to head strait for the tank just past the house, and work my way back to the ravine and road tank. Then get setup overlooking the baited area on the far side of the tank.
I snatched up my Covert camera on my way out with intentions of watching the ravine while positioned at the tank.
With minutes of daylight left I was now in position behind a 4x8 section of lattice tied to a small tree on the east bank of the tank. Its a simple but effective blind for night hunting.
The lease in San Marcos is far different from hunting the open hay fields here in Bastrop Co. Most of the lease is covered with cedar and other scrub trees. To this day I'm a little uneasy hunting in one spot on my own considering you need to get setup on the ground with thick scrub to your back 15 to 20 ft away.
On this outing I elected to bring along my noise cancellation ear muffs In addition to blocking out the sound of gunfire, you can crank up the volume to amplify the ambient sounds.
The sun was now completely down and darkness had fallen when the frogs in the tank went into full symphony. The next thing I hear is a mosquito buzzing around and I think to myself. "Crap I'm going to need to make a trip to wally world for more bug spray".
It wasn't long and two coons showed up to offer a show for something to watch and pass the time. Then all of a sudden I hear a bunch of movement in the grass west of my position. With the earmuffs cranked up It sounded like a 100 buffalo, and I couldn't tell if they were 10 ft or 100 yards away.
With the moon now on my back I had elected to lay prone on the edge of the tank berm. Scrub and cedars were completely blocking the view between my position and the noises I had heard, and as soon as it started, the sounds vanished. My heart was now pounding, Hogs? Coyotes? Cows? Bears? After laying still for a min or two I elect to grab the 6.8 with the thermal and ease back down to the road 15 ft away. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Once on the road I can fairly easily see 50 or 60 yards down the road in the direction I heard the noise, and nothing.
I ease back up the tank towards the lattice and there there. 30 give or take, and there's one Completely on Alert. The rest were totally focused on chowing down on the 40 lbs of corn I donated to the nights hunt.
The elusive white with black spotted sow had been spotted on game camera pictures. 10 ft away I also had my 243 with the photon NV scope I had intended to use with hopes of taking the spotted sow out.
With the nearly full moon shining down on my back I didn't want to risk moving out into the open and elected to take a shot at this alerted sow hoping it was the spotted one. I pulled the trigger just as she walked back into the group. Within 10 seconds the dust settled, and there were two on the ground.
