Boar Single with Pulsar Thermion 5.5x and Axion 5.5x Brief Comparison

Last night netted one boar, but I got some time to play with the Thermion XM50 (rifle scope) and Axion (handheld) XM38, both of which are 5.5x. The larger lens of the Thermion does seem to make a noticeable difference.

Checking one of my last places on the way home revealed a hog out in the field behind the landowner's barns. I made my approach out to him and was undoubtedly busted by being backlit by the security lights. However, the hog wasn't too pressured, but went on the move none the less. I am still getting used to working with 5.5x and failed to realize how far away the hog was and did not lead the hog far enough with my first shot. The delayed report of the impact alerted me to my error and subsequent shots were more properly led.

As he sings: "Getting to know you...". The joy of getting used to new gear. Nuttin' wrong with that kill. Good lookin' boar. Thanks for the extra effort dubbing in the sound track from your other source.

Good hog down! In one of your post you mentioned the eye relief. Do you have to get close to it where you might get scope eye after a shot or two? Especially if it's mounted on a bolt action

I don't like working with barbed wire and it is hard to tension a small enclosure without extra T-posts (otherwise, everything collapses inward), so I went with 8' by 50" ready (cattle) panels. The panels are wired to the T-posts. Deer can hop in or go through the lower holes that I cut for the hogs. Turkeys also use these access holes. I made animal access points on only 3 sides. I made human access gate at the back corner.

I bought 300 feet of smooth wire several years ago from Tractor Suppy that I use for fence repairs and such. It is handy dandy to have around, sort of like a brother to duct tape. That is what I used to wire all this together.

The nice thing about this setup is that it is reusable. I can remove the panels with some wire cutters, pull up the T-posts, and transport it elsewhere. When it is time to leave, there will be nothing left behind.

This feeder does not throw corn much beyond the distance of the fence. Most falls in about an 8 foot radius of the feeder, so I am not feeding the cattle that come by on a regular basis.

Barbed wire is a cheaper way to go and less metal to potentially interfere with a shot, but I bleed a lot when I handle barbed wire. ;)

You are not supposed to field test the fencing. Just assume that it will work!
Is this an "Aggie" thing? ;)

Huh? How do you know if it will work if you don't test it? I looked for the instructions, but none came with the barbed wire. Testing the cattle panels was equally successful, but with less blood.
