How close can you get with a Trijicon 60mm thermal?

Great videos and explanation.

Regrettably, I am not in the demographic of having both the cash for a 60 mm and 20 foot proximity to multiple targets.

Very interesting.
I had a 35mm IR Hunter MKII, and it was darn good. But, I"m just an average marksman and I need every advantage I can get. For that reason I upgraded to the 60mm MKIII and I truly like it!

It's my favorite scope right now for 90% of my trips.

My first IRD (Trijicon) was a mk2 35mm ... and for 2 years it met all my needs for "coop" defense ... then we ramped up the cattle production and I wanted ability to PID out much farther, so upgraded to 60mm which is a GREAT long distance spotter.
Last night, in the rain, I saw a "blob" in a spot ... and it was very hot, so I knew it was alive ... it had been raining for 3 days ... so conditions were "sea of grey". Our green house is on a rise and this blob could've been near the green house and closer, which would've meant it was NOT a cow. But it looked like the rear end of a cow (front end not visible). I inverted to white hot, but still no PID. I increased digital magnification to 8x (net 18x) ... and now I could see the tail swishing back and forth and could PID as cow. White tails, don't have tails ... and other critters have different tails. So turned out this was a cow at about 250yds. But the 60mm definitely helped with that PID. And I mount it on 5.56(10.3) carbine so it is easy to carry and hold up. I call it my "night spotter" :).

Tell me more about your 10.3 inch barrel please. What is the twist rate? What bullets does it seem to like? I've got a 10.3 inch Hanson barrel 1:8 twist that doesn't like 55 grain Hornady Vmax. It shoots 2-3 inch groups. I switched to my 16 inch Rock River 1:9, but I'd like to use my shorter barrel.

It is a Colt 5.56(10.3) upper ... truly monolithic top rail ... trade off being harder to get to the barrel, but it can be done with a breach end barrel vise.

IIRC the only bullets I've used are 77gr SMK and 62gr TSX and they both work fine.

For example, the holds for the 62 TSX (with 50/100yd double zero) are 6 inches at 200yds, 12 inches at 250yds and 20 inches at 300yds.

I use the 62gr TSX for hogs and the 77gr for all else.

The 55gr XM193 does not work well out of any of my 1/8 or 1/7 carbines (10.3, 10.5, 14.5).

The Colt 10.3 upper is 1/7 twist.
