hunted with a buddy at his place along the canyon. was supposed to just be a daytime hunt but of course the hogs weren’t moving until dusk. we spotted a big black hog making its way along the side of the canyon wall like a billy goat. it was really pretty impressive to see such a big animal maneuver so gracefully along what looked like a sheer cliff.
we let it continue along until it reached a place where it wouldn’t fall into thickets. he sent 139 grains out of the 6.5-284 across 535 yards of canyon expanse, walloping the pig high in the shoulder. it started running, on what I don’t know, but it moved to 555 yards and he sent another round tumbling the pig to the bottom. I could still make him out in the binos, but it was too far and dark for the scope, even at low power.
now we had a job ahead of us. there was absolutely no way to carry a rifle down and we didn’t have any pistols with us. the descent amounted to riding the rocks down, preferably on our rumps or sides and using heavily gloved hands like rudders to try and control the 150’ skid. we’d worry about getting back up later.
that’s not the place to be without a light, but seeing was not a problem with p3x furys. I lined up the trees at the top of the cliff and zeroed in on the last seen location. the coordinate grid led us right to it, but it wasn’t dead. far from it! it lunged and growled while popping its teeth. I threw my ka-bar at it and stuck it into the upper area all the way to the tang. fortunately that paralyzed it and I was able to get close enough with a boulder lifted over my head and smash it. pretty big pig and well worth the effort.
