Load versus Reload

Curiosity question:

A new Hornady 120gr SST weighs 280.3 gr

If you subtract:
Fired Hornady case minus primer - 106.3 gr
CCI small rifle primer - 3.4 gr
Hornady new 120 gr SST bullet - 120 gr
You get 30.6 gr
Can we assume 30.6 equals approx. the weight of powder load? Any idea what powder they use?
Hodgen says H322 is 23.5 - 27.1 gr

Don't know what Hornady uses, but AA2200 is the most commonly used powder for heavier 6.8 reloads.

I wouldn't trust your math, too much room for error. Try pulling the round apart and measure and inspect the powder itself.

Food for thought though. Factory 120sst is only 75 fps faster than my reloads. But my reloads are more accurate.

That's a very good point. Thanks

Also, keep in mind that manufactures have access to powders/blends that we don't.

Most of them custom make their powder blends just for that round
