I think the consensus is, when a wild species mates with a domestic dog, the off-spring can (later generations) end up with black fur. I heard that about wolves once.
That was my view also. I have heard about Coy-dogs for years and just assume that this is the result of one of those unions. An article I read years ago about Coy-dogs was predicting the doom of all wildlife because the hybrid results would breed throughout the year instead of once/year like purebred coyotes. It's hard enough to control coyote numbers now, imagine if they bred several times a year like domestic dogs.
