Pulsar Core RXQ30V

Thanks Randy. I'm happy to answer any questions you guys have, but know I'm a thermal newb so you might have to dumb down the tech. I will do the blitz tour since it arrived Weds right around 5.

Had it mounted to the QR and buzzed the entire menu/setup in maybe 30 minutes. Cheek weld is super solid and firm just like with my day glass and eye relief just right so no complaints with the adjustability of the mount/height I don't feel as if anything has changed in my setup compared to my Vortex. I moved the Pulsar one set of QD holes further forward than the pic you saw above ultimately. I use the LaRue RISR to get my face up a bit I was wondering how it would all sort out.
Zeroing. Dunno yet. Crazy lightning during the storms yesterday didn't stop until about 8.

Contrast/brightness. This will be a learning curve for me to find what's right. Reticle choices are neat and the white hot/black hot options are both nifty and quick. Think I like the white hot for now. I think by the end of the night I was on the right track. Contrast was on 9/20 and brightness a 5 out of whatever max is....mode I can't recall, but it was good enough. Like the green, but have no point of reference. My glasses are -7.5 vision is horrible, astigmatism and about 2 years from cataract surgery. No issues going back and forth, no eye strain and really until I typed this article I just thought about what a non-issue it was to look through the scope last night. Might be dif with a super long night will have wait and see.

Saw part of the cattle herd at maybe 800. I might be off a bit here b/c my night time range estimation is obviously new. Having said that I know ranging all over the property b/c of shooting locations lasered to trees, water troughs etc so I'm not off too terribly much.

I spotted a couple of other sounders b/f I shot at these and they spooked when I green lighted them. Was way down wind of them the area of the property I was in has shot at that bunch too much with greenies. I tried the suggestion of lighting up above them and it still got their attention I even had my way less powerful light last night. Saw the shooter bunch at b/t 5 and 600, but would have liked to have seen how much farther out it could have been since the instant I turned north into this field they appeared. Closed to maybe 200 and parked the truck. Walked in with a bolt 308 and scanned until the moon light was sufficient. Took bigger hog right away made a big jump and dropped 5 feet later. Smaller took off running right at me and shot at maybe 20 yards right in the top of the back looks like it came out askew through right shoulder. Dropped instantly thinking I hit some neuro hardware.

Saw a ton of deer and the last few I saw really surprised me where they were laying up. I see you fellers! Battery longevity is awesome I was only out maybe 2 hours not sure how much scanning, but batt shows about 80% left no number just visual.

I can't imagine wanting or needing anything more for my first thermal or likely any thermal really the way our property is laid out. Of course if I looked through one of these Bentley $5k thermals I'd go crazy, but this is a pure hunting tool for me to get rid of hogs in addition to trapping. I needed capable, not 'the best'......I think that's what I have with the Core RXQ.

Absolutely enjoyed and appreciated your write up. Great information. I have been so excited for you because you have been so excited ever since you found out from UPS it was arriving.

I value field reports from new owners very much.

I look forward to the day I finally pull the decision trigger and buy mine. Have to write daughter''s Fall university tuition check first; then it is my turn.

Enjoy the heck out of the Core! I look forward to reading about how easy it was to zero. I was pleasantly surprised to read the unit has picture-in-picture option. I am somewhat apprehensive about no one-shot zero option. On my previous hog hunts, it took some time, even with the seasoned guide, to go through menu to zero it. I hate messing around with multiple tv remotes.

Best regards

Randy

Randy there is a one shot zero on the Core RXQ. I think I'm going to use the traditional way manipulating X/Y, but let that apprehension go there are 2 options! If I can dial it in to a 2MOA rifle I'm perfectly fine with that and with 1MOA graduations that should be doable. Will letcha know.

Good reviews so far looks like this maybe a great entry level thermal scope for hunters. I have to kind of laugh at the words "entry level" as just two or three years back this would be a 4K plus scope and with 384 core and considered high end performance. Thermal technology is progressing rapidly but really anything decent with a 320 and above core is a serious hunting tool.

Ha I know as if I actually know what high or low end is....I think it's b/c of the price I call it that and then the 'it doesn't have video wtf?!' comments I call it 'entry level'. Coming from a cheap $12 Chinese green light.....I loves me some thermal like a fat boy loves cake. Video is pointless and useless for me I don't know anyone who would give two hoots about it or want to watch it. Watching what deer do and where is another great aspect for me. Although I do love dj's tutorials....get some. I took one of a hog back in maybe Jan for my little nephew he loved it and I promptly deleted it. Just wanna hunt and improve my venison stores.

sometimes that can be a real pain. good kills tho!!
Thanks dj! The lightning was so bad....really wanted to get it dialed in, but not at the risk of becoming a statistic FL is so bad with that. Gonna get 'er dun this evening I hope. At the very lease taking my buddy out to spot for him he needs a kill.

Thanks Myron I really appreciate all your guidance through the process. Last night was nuts. Taking my buddy out tonight just going to spot for him and let him get some first rips on them....hope they are out just as thick tonight.

Went out again last night spur of the moment was just going to see how it performed in the rain and do some deer watching, but was going to take an opportunity to test the zero if I had a chance. Saw 2 monster bucks cross to the north section of our property. Not sure if they will follow that pattern this fall, but 'I see you!'. Have been setting up on wrong end of the head that is about 400 yards wide at the crossing. Rolled down to Hogville zip code and 4 popped out. Was nice to see the rifle is dialed in put one right below the ear at about 50 yards kneeling. The PIP is really nice. Saw a total of 12 deer, mostly doe, but 2 giant bucks and some nice intel. The fog came in my last 30 minutes and I was still able to pick up warm critters farther out than I need. Loving the RXQ. Battery longevity is hard to track for me b/c I don't watch the clock, but 3 trips out and lots of scanning. On 2nd set of batts and they are at about 75%. I do use the option to shut the display down with a quick press of the on/off when not scanning and wasn't doing that on batt set 1.

Here is a hog at 60 yards obscured by wheat. Picture is taken with a camera behind the scope. The image in the scope is better than this. My camera kept washing out the left side of the view because the barb wire that was up close.

And the after effects of a prescription for lead pills.

Are you holding a nice camera up or your phone? My pics look horrible when I put the iphone up there.....probably operator error.

Nice, I see you are using circle dot reticle also . I like that one on my XP38 trail it works great for second and third shots on running hog/hogs.

I really like the size of the scope and would like to see the form factor of having the DLOC mount attached vs the overly bulky pulsar factory mount. A ultra compact scope like that needs a smaller single lever /thumb screw style mount. Personally, I would test the POI after removal with only one lever and maybe mill the front of the mount away to make a nice compact attachment rail. Seems like that would be better for spotter use also.

When I'm doing several miles of hiking vs sitting at stand I often just take my ReapIR alone to save on weight I carry on me. With the DLOC mount and neck laynard it's really fast and quiet to attach on my rifle. I practiced it to the point I can now do it in total darkness in under 8 seconds. That's around the same time it takes to power up scope alone so it's really just as fast as using a monocular, spotting a target and then powering the scope up for shot.

Seems like this small pulsar scope would be perfect for the same type of use with the right low profile mounting system. Something like the DLOC ReapIR mount would be perfect low profile and spring loaded rail grabber makes it easy and quiet to attach in darkness.

I'm holding my galaxy S7 active behind the scope. I zoom it in slightly or else the picture is really small. I the phone takes better pictures then my point and shoot digital camera. The lens on my DSLR is too large to try to take pictures in the scope.

The problem with hacking off the front of the mount is you will lose the recoil lug. Of course, if you have a mill you could cut a new slot with ease. I wonder if the DLOC mount for the Trail will fit the RXQ30V?

Ah very good thanks was able to get a clear pic zooming in a bit. One of the guys on the lease is interested in a thermal now and wanted to know what the clarity was like.....gonna get him a pic of a dog walking tonight I guess.

Randy a bit more detail on the zeroing process. I used a freshly painted IDPA silhouette and it lit up really well during daylight. Not sure if this is a known way to get it done, but the dif b/t freshly painted and not was huge the 6" gong next to it was only visible on a bit of the top edge. So I set up at 100 yards and shot off the hood of my truck using moving blankets for the barrel support and a squeeze bag under the stock. 1MOA adjustments at 100 yards on the Pulsar so it's never going to be an F class accuracy tool. That said the first shot was ~ 4" low and 4" right. Fired 2 more and POI was sharing paint and barrel a little warm. Moved the X and Y over to center of that POI group(POA was center of chest). So ok let's try it out. Went to center of head on IDPA and blew his proverbial nose off and that was good nuff for me to go huntin.

Seemed to work out well that evening I aimed just below and behind the ear on a hog and ended up being a little low, but it was an offhand shot I can live with that. Will try something in the 100-ish yard range this week off my truck or tripod. Ideally I like a 200 yard zero and since my load data/barrel length/scope height etc crosses at 48 yards on the way up for a 200 yard zero I might go to that.

Update....6/20. Adjusted the zero last night and took it out to verify…augered this ol boys brains outat what turned out to be exactly 51 paces so pretty close to my goal. Put it exactly where I wanted. I know this can't keep up I am bound to get skunked one of these nights, but every time I've been out I've shot at least one!

If you Core RXQ guys get tired of my updates just say so afalex1 is clearly an infinitely more knowledgeable thermal user and will get the points across better. That said the above hog last night I wanted to add one more thing for the dolts on LSB of which I am one. Right b/f I had noticed my batts getting low so changed them out. Mine came loaded in pairs with plastic on them and you just break them apart. Figured no big deal. I put this pair in and poof nothing. Check upside down nothing. Luckily my buddy said 'what about this little tiny piece of plastic? Bingo. It was maybe 1mm long, but right in the perfect spot to keep it from getting contact. Powered up. HOG DOWN 2 minutes later! Wish I'd of had a truck to shoot down b/c this boar was with another one that was the biggest I've seen on the property. Just a dinosaur, but he was head down and all I could get was a look at the top of his back and his ass b/c the grass is mid thigh. Luckily the one I shot had raised his head up and gave me a peek at his noggin. Tough to see in that grass

This is clearly newb/moron 101, but figured it might keep someone from having a thrombo.

Your reports are fascinating and informative.

I remember the excitement and anticipation I had when my night vision and DBAL3 arrived. It will be double fold for thermal. I cannot imagine the meltdown I would have it the unit does not work when I power it up.

All the wisdom you offer in your posts are beneficial and are stored away in my mind when that day arrives!

Keep up the great work! Randy
