Backpack rifle

So I have been contemplating an idea and was wondering others opinion. Hear me out and let’s see if I can word this right. I asked this on another forum and people were less than helpful. So I have been thinking of getting a takedown rifle I can fit in a backpack. I have no specifics on where it will be carried but it might end up in my edc backpack. In Florida I wouldn’t need much firepower and could probably get away with a ruger 10/22 takedown. The caliber conversation comes in to play if I decide to go somewhere else. Right now in my backpack I carry my Tnw aero 10mm. Takes Glock mags, ammo is light and if I ever needed it I would be able to have access to it. I carry my backpack every time I go camping and I also have it with me every day when I go to work. I know most comments is a gun in a backpack does me no good if something large with teeth is coming after me but if I go places I might need it then it comes out. I do always have a pistol on me, usually my 1911 in 10mm or my xds in 45 so that’s a quick access gun. If you were going to head into the woods on a camping trip and wanted a little more firepower but also wanted to be able to keep it out of sight in a backpack what would you get and in what caliber?

Mossberg Shockwave. Based off the 590 platform. No stamp, OTC purchase, classified as a "firearm". Note the stubby shells in the saddle. It will handle those, OR the full size shells. An insert (soft rubber) pops in to ensure reliable feeding of these stubbies. Pull it out with your fingers if you want to load full house loads. I have a Crimson Trace laser (designed for it) , and a separate flashlight. Remington also offers one called the Tac-14 (one less round in the mag tube capacity than this one). Does it get more versatile than a short/pistol gripped 12 ga. capable for using just about every type of load available for a shotgun? BTW... that soft rubber accessory works ONLY in a Mossberg, due to the design of the action. I cannot say whether the Remington will feed as reliably as this one while using those stubbies.

For size perspective, on the lower level of the case... that is a Sig P220 with the wooden grips. The other is a Lionheart 9mm.

What is the over all length of that?

survival or self defense, if its might be used more for survival, the Henry AR-7 could be used for small game and a limited self defense, compact, light.
if your more concerned about self defense, maybe something like a high capacity bullpup, like a Tavor, heavier, but with more stopping power. Just my thoughts. I typically carry a 9mm EDC, then a rifle within short distance, either 556 or 6.8spc, (calibers, just because I already own them). I figure if I need a rifle, the EDC with help me get to the rifle, if need be. If your looking for a survival bug out, then Henry AR-7 with tons of 22lr ammo would last days. Just my thoughts.

mom thinking more of a what if worst case. If I’m traveling florida I just use my 10mm rifle. It’s light, ammo isn’t too bad. I keep 2 30 round mags since it takes Glock mags. I’m wondering what if I’m going somewhere else. Like what if I’m traveling or heading off into the woods somewhere. The biggest problem I have is explaining it all. It’s one of those, what if I’m camping in bear country? What if I’m camping in mountain lion country? What if I come across Bigfoot? I guess in the end it’s more of a hypothetical what if situation. I’m wondering what the go to rifle for defense against animals, people, zombies????? What is the go to rifle for bug out to the middle of nowhere and have to hunt?

This is the point where my thoughts go so far down the rabbit hole of searching and wondering what the perfect rifle would be that I start to lose everyone else. It’s one of those “I’ve watched too many stupid movies” situations. That’s why I was saying it’s hard to explain my wonderings. What if I’m in the norther woods, given local laws allowing, and I’m sitting around camp knowing there might be big animals….. what rifle would I want?

You can probably drive yourself crazy by "what iffing". You already have a great set-up for just about everything up to bear and you have the convenience of ammo compatibility between your hand gun and long gun. What you have to ask yourself more is "how likely are you to ever be in the Northern/Alaskan wilderness" and need something other than the rifle you brought with you for the once in a lifetime hunt that brought you there in the first place. If 99% of the time you will be in some other place, you already have a good solution.

That’s kind of where my thought process leads me back to but then I think “what if I need something bigger” which leads to “maybe I need to buy another weird gun”. I’m about to form 1 a lower and I have a 10” 50 Beowulf upper to put on it when I do. That could always work as well. The other side of it is I could just buy a Glock 20 and my rifle and pistol would take the same mags

That's true, then you can carry as many mags as you feel needed. On the other hand, if you go T-rex hunting just swap the .50 and you're good to go.

I was also looking at takedown lever actions. That might be a fun one but I think it might be too heavy

I live on a ranch in texas, when i drive around on the mule, i have a 22lr bolt action suppressed with subsonic ammo and a grendel sighted in at 200yds, each has there purpose, i always carry a 9mm concealed, have for the last 5 years, so yes, each has a purpose not every gun is a catch all, like chopprdriver said, you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to find the perfect gun, i do like having a small caliber and something a little bigger, i shoot the 22lr the most, but when you see a coyote at 200yds you need more gun, now zombies i think id rather have 1000 rds of 22 lr supersonic , because no body likes getting shot with anything

The reason I end up down this rabbit hole is watching movies and wondering what I would do. I get that it’s movies and movie logic is stupid but why not carry something? I think I’m going to stick with my 10mm and look into a 22 take down of some kind. I like the ruger 10/22 but the Henry ar7 has always been high on my want to try list

1022 ruger is at the top of the food chain, in regards to 22lr, i own several, even made a 6 gun, gatlin gun out of the 1022, it only weighs 100lbs, so not zombie worthy, good luck in your quest

I love the 10/22 as well. Maybe I’ll get both. I have always wondered if the Henry was just a gimmick or if it’s something worth having
