This last weekend was our annual early season deer hunt weekend at our place. Family and friends comes in from all over and it’s typically good hunting, mixed with plenty of camp fire sitting, and beer drinking. With the sign we’ve seen the past few months, figured we’d get a couple hogs from the stands, but never imagined as much as what happened. I took my deer rifle to the stand each time, so while I wasn’t going to not shoot a pig, my focus was really on trying to get a deer, 1. Thursday night - first sit in the deer stand, I was watching two small bucks eat as the sun dropped and daylight faded away. A few minutes before I lost enough light for my scope to pick up their silhouettes, out walks a boar. Something spooked him and he started to head out of the feeder area, then he stopped, turned back towards the feeder and walked right into my crosshairs. Scope went yellow from the muzzle blast and last thing I saw was the boar heading for the woods. Within seconds the two bucks were back on the corn without a care in the world... boar laid down one of the best blood trails I’ve ever gotten from a pig. In total he made it about 50 yds from where I hit him. 2. Saturday mid-day we were tracking a boar someone had shot earlier. Finally jumped him and put him down with my .300blk pistol at ~50yds or so. This is the first pig I’ve shot with the gun - although the pig was already in rough shape from being shot earlier - I was pleased with the performance of the 120 gr Sig round. 3. Saturday night we did a lap to check feeders with the thermal before going back to camp to get on with the rest of the night. Last feeder we checked, a boar walked out and ran off a doe. The 6.8 dropped him where he stood with a 120 SST. In total we had 5 confirmed boars down this weekend. Two more pigs were shot at. One with confirmed impact, we just weren’t able to put eyes on a body. This is the first in a long time that we saw this many solo hogs - usually we’ll see a sounder or two and maybe one or two loan boars. All in all it was a productive weekend - even though no one shot a deer. Other casualties of the weekend include 1 coyote and a raccoon. After we get a good freeze or two and the mosquitos die off, I’ll probably get out for a good night hunt or two to keep knocking down the numbers.
