From my understanding of flip to the side thermals that mount in front of your day optics...how does that work?
With Intensifier night vision...the light gathering etc. is clear cut, it goes through the NV optic to your day scope to your eyes. With a thermal, you are actually looking at a digital screen...if we were to increase to x2 or x4 with the day optic (like elcan specter 1x-4x) wouldn't we just be zooming in on the LED screen inside the thermal? How can there be any clarity in that?
Or do we not use zooming day optics and just go by the x1 or x2 of the flip to the side thermal ie. say...UTM-X, LWTS etc?
Can someone explain that to me?

Most "clip on" thermal's don't flip to the side, and neither do clip on NV, but... You are correct. Most clip on thermal's work well with low power scopes and are at there best around 2x-3x or so.

But the military uses a small, pixel dense screen on some thermal clip ons that allow higher magnification, like 10-12x and 1,000 yard shots and are useless with a low power scope.
