Yeah, the technology actually works pretty well, but as noted, it is quite bulky and DIYers can build such gizmos for a lot less. Me, I would be more concerned with torqueing the unit off the scope and possibly damaging a good scope in the process.

For ratting, however, in a friendly, easy to navigate environment, it might be a fun toy.
