My thermal has five different color "pallet" settings. I find myself using white hot, black hot,and a light red color.
White hot to look a long distance just to see if there is a target out there. I can see deer and hogs at about 700yds. Coyotes at about 550-600yds. And rabbits, coon, possum, and dillos at about 450yds.
Black hot for looking down roads with thick brush on either side and for between the rows of planted pines. Also gives better resolution if the humidity is 90% or so or some light ground fog.
The light red color is used for all around viewing. It seems to give me the best resolution at <200yds. I can seem to better make out the angle that the aminal is turned as it related to my position. An example would be quartering away or to me. Or to the right or left. This color also will allow you to ID a target if it is <150yds but behind or in and out of the thicker brush. --- pruhdlr
