looks like I’ll get rained out for deer hunting so went out with a bud for a look around. night air was chilly but little to no wind made it very pleasant. spotted the hogs where we thought they’d be. fortunately the ground was soft enough for quiet stalking. getting there with no noise was going to take a while. as soon as we entered the field I smelled a dead hog. the more I walked the worse it got. it tried breathing through my mouth but the decay just seemed to stick to my tongue.
night was too dark for the pvs14 at that distance, so we stopped every 100 yards or so. no matter how far we went the stench consumed us. not much else to do so we pushed on. finally in position where we couldn’t go any more without getting busted. I had my bud start out on the big one while I took the chip shot at the close one. got a good countdown and… bam! except there was only 1 shot. whatever his problem was there was no un-ringing the bell. the race was on.
then I quickly back tracked to the big one and threw down a field of fire. somewhere in there my friend joined in. big boy was down but not for long. back up, a few spins and he’s off again, and so are we. not sure if we hit him again or if he just collapsed, but he was down. measured him with a tow strap and taped later at 50". i really thought he was going to go over 300 but the tape didn't cooperate.
I got in some good target practice on more dirt clods without getting distracted from all the commotion running around me. some of the shots were quite impressive with plumes of dirt spraying in the air. when we brought up the truck for recovery, flashlights revealed bird feathers everywhere. found out today the smell was chicken manure. I got used to it out in the open, but on the way home I just knew my friend had crapped in his pants.
