Info on my thermal sez that you cannot look directly into the sun or a welding arc. But since a thermal detects heat or cold that is different than the ambient air,you can look directly into a light bulb,street light,or use it for daylight hunting.
Mine works great in the full sun in the winter time if the ambient air gets down below 50deg.

What he said. The only times I really have any issues with daytime hunting is in the summer, around 8PM where everything has heated up to about animal temperature, but once the sun goes down a bit more, things cool off rapidly and you are GTG.

Most of my hunts start in the evening, long before the sun goes down.
