Close in price would be the Armasight Zeus 336 3-12x42 and Pulsar Apex XD50a. You don't have a lot of choices for bettering the Apex XD38a and staying under $3500.
Personally I'd say the Zeus 336 42mm

I have been thinking about this same exact question. I hunt with a Zeus 640/3x/75 but if my son or a friend goes they use my PVS14/Eotech setup. It would be great if there was a spotter/clip-on, like a 320res Reap that sold for half of what a Reap costs. I know, keep dreaming.
