3 Hogs Down in SE Texas

Bob (forum member) invited me down to SE Texas. I was supposed to go down earlier in the week, but had an unexpected medical detour that took me out of the game for a few days, but I made it down for one night of hunting.

Bob got us set up in an area where there was rooting damage. Initially, things were warm, calm, and foggy. Then the wind picked up and instead of fog, it was fog and mist. On top of that, it has rained heavily the previous night and the fields were soggy. The gravel roads were soggy, LOL.

Hogs came in and Bob got us on the hogs...

Rough shooting conditions. Connecting, is a good thing.

Tough thermal conditions. At least it wasn't raining while you were out. :D
Good shooting! It's always good when you put down some hogs.

How far are you typically willing to stalk after hogs? I admit that when I see some that are over 1,000 - 1,500 yards distant (well over ½ mile away) I sometimes let them go if there's no vehicle access. I typically keep the leg quarters, and it often requires two additional trips to haul everything out.

Also, hope you enjoyed the trip to SE Texas. I grew up on the upper Texas coast about 30 miles from Louisiana.

Depends on whether we can let the hogs lay or have vehicle access or not. I don't mind the stalk to get to hogs. I think my longest was 1900+ yards each way, then we got to drive in to do recovery. To make a stalk on distant hogs, they need to be bedded or eating, not traveling. It is hard to catch hogs on the move when you are on foot, LOL.

Of course, things like mud and obstacles in between put severe limitations on stalking.

Good shooting. The weather wasn’t too good but the hog killing was fine!
