Which difference makes the biggest significant Improvement in terms of resolution and clarity, microns or core.

Is it more of a benefit to purchase a unit with a 12 micron core 320 unit or a 640 unit 17 micron?

12 vs 17 pitch by itself makes no difference to resolution.

Glass quality
Resolution of the microbolometer (front end resolution)
software in the core
display on the back
lens on the back

All those matter.

640x480 gives you 307,200 pixels
320x240 gives you 76,800 pixels

So if pixel count = resolution then 640x480 gives you 4 times the resolution of 320x240 ...

However, is "image quality" strictly equal to pixel count? I do not think so. All 640s are not created equal. The glass, the software, the display, all those matter to image quality.

What pitch size buys you is size, weight, power consumption ... the device designer can design a smaller lighter widget that uses less power.
