Time to upgrade...but WHICH PULSAR?!?

Hey guys, need help deciding which thermal to go with. I'm currently using an Apex XD38A and want to stay with the Pulsar line. I hunt several farms with very wide fields up to a mile across. My Apex says 900yd detection but I get much better results than that. Shots are taken as close or as far away as I feel like stalking. Ground is flat with planted corn and beans.

I originally wanted an Trail XQ38 as all my buddies use it and have great results. But I figured I might go with the XQ50 since it's detection range is 1970 yds vs 1475 with the 38.

Then I thought....would it not be better to go with a 640 unit? If so, the XP38 would be my choice.

If you had to pick an upgrade over the XQ38, would you opt for a larger lens or a 640 resolution?

My Apex is 1.5 magnification, the XQ38 is 2.1, the XQ50 is 2.7, the XP38 is 1.2.

Last consideration...I have the XQ38's in stock locally. The others are all going to be a 6-8 week wait.

Help!

I wish they had a 2.7 640 unit but since they don't i went with the Q50. I don't miss the wide FOV. I like being able to shoot at native resolution and I really haven't been using the picture in picture. I'm hunting pastureland and river bottoms mostly.

Scroll down to the discussion started by kickers titled Trail XQ50 or XP50. You might be able to find your answer there. I was in the same boat as you but I was looking at moving up from my Trail XQ38. Decided to go with the XQ50 and it will be delivered tomorrow. Gonna keep the XQ38 as my woods scope because of the FOV and I'll use the XQ50 for wide open spaces. I talked to a tech guy at Pulsar and he made the 384 vs 640 issue easy to understand. He said it was like watching 1080p vs 4k. Obviously there's more to it than that but check out the thread above. It really helped me. Good luck!

Good points Rooter. That thread helped. I decided to go with the Q50 also. I’m scanning up to a mile away so he extra distance is most helpful to me. I’ll keep the Apex for close in work and when I’m in the thick stuff.

Now I gotta wait 6-8 weeks!

Boat driver, I think you made a good choice. My XQ50 came in this afternoon. I've been watching the deer this evening off the back porch with it. I've got a feeder straight back from the porch at 410 yards. At the basic magnification of 2.7 there is absolutely no confusion about what's at the feeder. Even the 10.8 magnification at that distance is well defined.
The fov definitely changes but as wray said above it wasn't a killer for him and it's not for me. All you got to do is move the scope around more to make up for the smaller width, lol! Too bad you gotta wait 8 weeks.
