Looking for suggestions on night vision. Would like something to be mounted on head/helmet . Have done some research, but looking for suggestions. Will be used strictly for navigation . Don't need anything for clip on ect. No first hand experience w nv so really don't know useful difference in gen 2/3 ect. Rather buy quality and spend extra than try to save a couple dollars. Thanks for any advice

Appreciate the recommendations It seems that the gen 3 14 is the most popular. Is there a huge difference in gen 2 vs 3? Will be buying two complete setups, so a couple hundred extra bucks gets multiplied.... I guess if someone could offer an explanation justifying the extra expense, that would help me. Thank you for your input so far.

I should be more specific . If you could explain that comparing side by side, gen 3 blows 2 out of water. Or gen 3 is slightly better. Something along those line would be helpful. Thanks

maybe you can rent a gen 2 and 3. exchange the one you don't want and the rental fee can apply to the purchase

flakester, paint Team OinK over your helmet and people will stop you on the street asking where you got the cool helmet

I faced the same questions last year. To answer your questions directly: 1) Regarding the "useful" difference in Gen 2 or 3 and "used strictly for navigation", after watching all the YouTube Videos available and looking through Gen 2 and Gen 3, I finally called Armasight and with the significant dollar difference between Gen 2+ and Gen 3 I went with NYX-14 HD MG Multi-Purpose Night Vision Monocular Gen 2+ “High Definition” with Manual Gain. I am absolutely thrilled with that decision. It serves my purpose of being able to navigate the night wonderfully. 2) Regarding "would like something to be mounted on head/helmet", I purchased a google kit that sits on my head and I am happy with that product. Since I am no longer in Afghanistan or Iraq, I can not justify to myself or my neighbors, running around with a helmet...so the google kit fills the need.

I live in Iowa and started hog hunting (3X) last year as practice for home defense training. Missing a hog is disappointing, but the knowledge gained from that practice should help when it really counts. Based on forum member's assistance, I purchased LWRC 6.8, DBAL A3 and Night Vision set up. I am very pleased with both the forum input and my decision based on that input. I am keeping my finger on the spending trigger regarding buying a thermal when the right time comes. Since you are getting into night vision, I would recommend buying a DBAL A3 to help you point, shoot and hit what you are looking at in the night. As a compromise, buy one Gen 3; but please consider buying one Gen 2+ and using that money to purchase DBAL A3.

Finally, the vendors on this forum have provided wonderful products and service so feel comfortable reaching out to them.

Best regards

Gen 3 PVS-14 is about the best deal for an all around nv unit for driving around etc. The binos are good but I honestly like the single so my other eye is adjusted to the dark and I can look down at my phone or whatever. The newer white phosphor units are awesome but with that its just preference. If you can see if you can find a place to try them out first.

I'd go Ops Core on the helmet. Crye is also another good one. If you wanna skip the helmet all together a crye nightcap is cool. I use one for walking into the bow stand and then packing it away in my bad when it gets light outside. Hard to do that with a helmet but its definitely not as supportive as a helmet is. Team wendy makes a great product but after their outspoken support for hillary there is no way I'd give them a dime.

Randy. I assume from being in Iraq and Afghanistan you were in the military. If so thank you for your service. A good friend of mine was in Afghanistan, he told me stories......
As for the rest of it, those are exactly the kind of opinions I was hoping for. I feel like I'd be satisfied with something that would let me see 40-50 yds in front of me. I would suppose an ir light would help, adjustable beam maybe? As for helmet, I really don't have any desire to have one, just seems like everything I've read suggest they're way more comfortable than the mid evil head strap setups . Keep suggestions coming if anyone has anything else to add. Thanks

Thank you for your kind words. With Gen 2+ I can see clearly 100 yards. I live on golf course and I can see from one hole to the next easily.

Regarding the IR light, I bought a Surefire IR and regular light and the experience is even more incredible.

A suggestion is to determine whether you want to mount the Surefire light on your rife or if you want it as a hand light. What I bought is not the version that can be rifle mounted but I wanted a small, yet powerful hand carry light. Having a strong, small regular light is also good when traveling.

If you want to shoot things at night, then the IR and illuminator on the DBAL A3 are so great you do not need a separate IR light.

In summary, both military and commercial version Gen 2+ or 3 will work. My family, friends and I are always blown away at how night vision and the Surefire light and/or DBAL A3 can turn pitch darkness, whether inside a house or outside, to visible.

Depending on what your desired purpose is, check out Telluric Group website for great information on night vision and gear for background.

Best regards

Seems like there is a quite a few that make the pvs14. Is there any particular that are better, or to stay away from?

I would check Telluric Group website to see what they carry. They were very helpful and courteous when I called them. They specialize in training law enforcement and military types so they know what works and what does not. I believe they get their stuff from Tactical Night Vision - so check prices before buying.
