Ya 30-30 on deer works great, but how deadly is it on a hog? I understand shot placement is everything but say I miss the neck and hit the body, will a 30-30 drop him or will he scatter?

I wouldn't worry about a specific caliber on hogs. Many calibers will kill hogs with correct shot placement. Many calibers won't kill a hog if you hit him in the wrong place. I shot a hog center mass a several years ago with a .338LM and did not recover him. I've dropped 250 lb hogs with a .223. IMO, get a gun you are comfortable with and that you can hit your target with all the time. I like .30 cals but that is just my preference. I'm waiting for things to slow down on the home front so I can try my new 6.5 and 6.8 guns. I'm sure your .30-30 will do just fine if you are proficient with it.

30-30 with good Bullet selection should work pretty well out past 150 yds. But a shoulder shot with varmint ammo on most calibers might not reach the vitals on a lot of big hogs.

That is the nice thing about an AR....virtually no kick back allows multiple quick shots on tough critters without losing your sight picture.

Looks like I might get close enough to a Montana elk this year to try out the 45\70 on one. There are a few grizzlies that roam on part of this particular ranch.

Beautiful land up there! The winters are a wee bit cold haha. My brother has been wanting me to come back but not really tempted. I think my wife would go.

IMO - - - > The 45-70's bullet needs to be put square on the shoulder. The best bullet (quickest, surest killer)that I ever loaded was the 405gr WFNGC (hardcast). This design at this speed was lethal.
I have owned quite a few 45-70's in the past but my gun that was always with me while guiding in Maine was an older Marlin 1895. It had the straight stock,no safety, and I had the bbl chopped to 16.5".
I used this gun and bullet combo to kill quite a few moose, bear, and some deer that were close to 300lbs on the hoof. The "secret" to making the 45-70 super effective is to put its bullets on bone going in. This starts the effects of hydrostatic shock and initiates the launch of secondary missiles. Bigger pieces of heavy bone that travels thru the animal and does almost as much damage as the bullet itself.
I only had the chance to kill two hogs with that gun. One was a great gnarly bore that had just come out of a backwater Juniper swamp. At 40yds I put that 405gr square on his shoulder that was covered with pine tar and gray clay. He dropped immediately. The bullet broke (shattered) the near side shoulder and exited thu the far side shoulder taking a piece of about 2X3" bone with it. He weighed real close to 300lbs.
NOW . . . do you need a max loaded 45-70 to kill hogs ?? Nope. But to carry one and shoot one sure is fun. --- pruhdlr

Ya, I'm trying to mentally prepare ahead of time for the Ccccccoooooooollllld weather. I sure gotta dress differently and gain a better understanding of frostbite prevention and so on. Quite a lot for a flatlander to adjust to.
