Walp, we located a sounder or two of hogs. Embarrassed! Hehehe. Right over the hill and down in a hole from our hunt camp. They hocked in the dogs middle of the cutover and it was on. Anyhow, one of our young members Mr Andy knocked this one down in the melee. I helped to get it out with the ATV and he let me have the pig. A flurry of YouTube and Google searches commenced from yers truly tryin to figger out what to do with the thing now I had one. Videos I saw on the quick seemed to range from Bubba & Billy-Bob's crappy camera angles (with even crappier music) to "The Perfessor" from some state school or agency doin the deed with a a lame version of MOP gear on. I'll be lookin, but any links to a proper vid of how to get it done appreciated.

I also located a sounder myself. After getting a way late start and thinking I'd screwed up the stand on the way in I got flustered and just plopped my carcass down at the base of a tree overlooking the corn pile down in the bottom. Two deer came in and busted me and then a sounder came in to the corn pile. (Note to self:Git up in the tree anyways, ya lazy slob!) In my "excitement" I learned a valuable lesson about why when one is using a SCAR17s with the reciprocating bolt handle and ejection port on the right side one DOES NOT lean the right side against a tree to "steady the shot".
**sigh** But anyways, I'm still jazzed that I actually saw some on somethin I put together. Now if only I can just get MY act together.. d:^) Jake..

I dunno. We had some pretty good pasta a few nights ago in camp that was made with boar meat in the sauce. There weren't any leftovers and nobody got hauled off to the hospital or morgue. I managed to get the shoulders, hams and tenderloin s off this one with all my own appendages still intact and not bleeding. Mind you, it was a pretty serious mammy-hack 'cause it was my first attempt. But the meat's in the cooler bleedin out as I type.
We still don't have enough of a population as to allow for being overly particular. d:^) Jake..

Ok. Found'em! Looks like yers truly was the "Founder of the Feast" for the local sounder. They spent all day Thanksgiving on my corn pile. The club pres has killed 2 this weekend on Friday and Saturday. I stayed on stand till 730ish last night and when I got back to camp my Moultrie cell cam was bangin out pics of a boar on the pile so I hatted up and headed back out. It's a tough stalk as it's all quiet valleys-n-ridges with mostly hardwoods. Lotsa crunchy leaves and those hills make a fat old man use the 4 wheeler. I got to my usual parking spot in a valley "this side" of the stand site and waited for another text from Moultrie to confirm I hadn't run him off with just gettin there. Within a minute I have confirmation he was still there so I started out toe-heelin it down the fire lane. Dunno if it was the megaton of crunchy leaves or wind but I got busted and he shagged azz to parts unknown. So I got back in the chair till just after midnight when I'd started to hear rain and had had enough of watchin those l'il scraggly bucks messin around in the corn.
Anyways, I'm closer but still no ceegar. d:^) Jake

I can relate. Took my marine core buddy out again this past week. Between him trying to figure out how to work the MKII and him not knowing how to judge distance and quickly tell the difference between hog and raccoon, we saw several hogs from +300 yards but weren't able to get a successful stalk and kill. I'm learning that even though he is familiar with NVGs and thermal, it takes practice (regardless of who) with the particular optic as well as repetition viewing 4 legged creatures to identify with confidence and move in for a kill.

Stay after them though! Patience is a virtue and will only make your soon to be successful hunt that much more rewarding!!

It's obvious you are on the right track now. You sure do have some healthy hogs there in that sounder. Should be fun when you finally cross paths. Good luck!

Both! I found where they were hangin out. Put out corn. They found it. :D

Looks like time in the stand is key for now. We've got'em pegged inna coupla general areas. Seems like scanning the larger open areas doesn't do too much good just yet. Plain ol' ambush in the thicker stuff. Most of what was shot over the last few weeks has been those 175-195# boars. I thought it a bit strange that I haven't seen any little piglets in with this sounder. Saw plenty, with a coupla sows, in the sounder just down the creek.
If nothin else it's a fun study. And agreed with theblakester about time spent practicing with the NV gear. All of it, actually. While I'm learning to get it done myself I've been volunteering to help with skinning duties to get a grip on that angle. This video was a big help with gettin started.
Got a few contacts from a local taxidermist to folks who might be having pig problems just North of here.
It's startin to feel like it's coming together a bit better now. d:^) Jake..

At least you found the hogs! They have not shown up at my hunting grounds consistently in months.

I'd think y'all would be lousy with'em over around the PeeDee and up that 95 corridor.

Does anybody have the info or a link to info/video about how to handle the genital area on a boar? (Dayum that just sounds so wrong!) While the videos on the Tube are very helpful, they seem to be missing that lovely part about dealing with the bunghole and urethra. I think the way I'm seeing it homer at the Omega Ranch is guided by gravity and removes the shoulders, back straps and anything useful that's below the bladder prior to dealing with the entrails. But we did something to allow them to fall into the chest area prior to removing the tenderloins.
Thanks for any assistance. d:^) Jake..
