Why did you choose 6.8 SPC II for hog hunting?

I don't personally use the caliber however I have seen a great many users on various forums transitioning to it lately.

Why did YOU choose 6.8 for hog / deer / yote dispatching?

I chose it for a lighter package than the M14 I was using with about the same knockdown power. It also has the side benifit of low recoil and muzzle climb.

It was either the 6.8 or a 308 as I knew the 223 and 300bo would not do the job as well. Now there are a lot of wildcats but I don't reload so the massive choice of factory ammo, light weight, low recoil and plenty of power is why I use it even today.

Cause all the cool kids were.........

I wanted more power than 223 or 300blk would give me while keeping an light SBR package. 308 upped the pounds too much and 6.5 didn't offer the factory ammo options or the SBR option.

wasn't even thinking about a 6.x when i joined here but the low recoil as seen in the vids got me interested. i really didn't care if i got a 6.5 or a 6.8 but didn't have local access to the tools for putting together an upper. hdfireman's site had the option to customize the components so that did it for me.

Same here, less recoil than 308 so follow up shots are easier. Good knockdown with the 120sst. Nice selection of factory ammo was a necessity.

I wanted an AR platform rig which was legal to hunt deer with in my State. A .22 cal pill is not allowed here.

I didn't care for the attitude (overall) of the folks over on the 6.5 site when I was reading up. Nor, did I care for the "thou shalt ONLY buy from ME" attitude of the 6.5 back in those days.

I was pointed over to 68forums, liked the feel of the community, the more realistic and factual based information. I was also very impressed with the offering of daily helps to the membership by H (***). Bison Armory used to be heavily involved with helping the membership, but faded away when he moved his location, and became hard to get ahold of. I have one Bison barrel (I like it), and I have 5 *** barrels (three calibers)... need to build four of them into uppers. Once I get them all built, that'll make 4 of them in 6.8 (3 of them by ***).

Last fall, I took my *** 6.8 with me elk hunting, didn't get a shot opportunity.

I built one after being picked on by Todd for shooting a 556. All it took was on hog kill to sell me. I took three deer with it the first year. I was shooting the SSA tactical load with 110 accubonds. I was amazed that a round with such light recoil killed with the authority it did. It is still my go to round, but I shoot the 120SST handloaded to just over factory velocity.

It does the job and does it well. Low recoil, lightweight, great bullet weight range for the cartridge size. Now 10 years later we have the best selection of bullets for hunting. I'm a velocity hound and it smokes the Grendel.

I enjoyed the AR package's size and weight but wanted a cartridge with more umph. I only reload if I must, so I was looking for readily available ammo too. That pretty much leaves the 6.8.

I rolled the dice. Mine isn't Sub MOA, but has yet to jam or not fire after 400 rounds, mostly at the range. Plus Its effective on Hogs. My first was over 250 lbs. Plenty of power to do the job as Wassman pointed out in his write-up. Fairly flat out to 200 yards, and yes much less recoil then the .308

The 6.8 SPC provides much better terminal performance on hogs than a .223 especially with 85 & 95 grain Barnes bullets, fast multi shot capability in an AR platform, and is an easy build. It's also decently accurate out to at least 250 yards.

The down side is there are really only a few bullets that are well suited for reloading it, and whether or not brass will continue to be available in the long run. But, if components become scarce, all it takes is a barrel, bolt, and mag to be a .223.

I still like a 308 for shooting hogs at 300 yards or better. The smash is better, and I have shot it so much that my confidence level with the 308 is very high.
