Another 6, including one really bad off sow

Six seems to be my number of late. I think number 7 disappeared from view into a low spot or was hidden by curious cattle.

Another good night of hunting. Had a really sick sow, emaciated, but no sign of previous trauma. She was rooting an eating, but obviously still very malnourished? Any ideas to why she was so bad off?

Ahhh... I see you came across the Celine Dion sub-species of hog. Actually, I'd bet it's just full of worms. Probably a good one for the land owner to burn.

I've never snapped a lug wrench while trying loosen a lug nut, I've been known to sheer lugs with a star wrench while tightening them (as a teen) before learning what a torque wrench was. LOL I always use a dab of anti-seize on lug nuts. I've never lost a wheel. I did, however, help a cousin with a King Pin removal on an old Massey Ferguson tractor he had. Using some good US made 3/4" drive sockets on a breaker bar (no cheater bar added)... I managed to break the socket in two. Sounded like a gun shot when it broke... and, I landed on my back. LOL I did eventually win that battle though.

Nice f/u work... too many zombie hogs in years passed. Good killin'.

I had one sow that looked like that on camera after I shot two of her sounder mates and she adopted their shoats. She was nursing about 20 babies and she got drawn down really bad but otherwise healthy. That was good shooting on that first hog.

Over nursing causing weight loss? Well, that is really interesting. I didn't check her teats to see if she still had milk. I wasn't sure I wanted to touch her at all, but she was on one of the properties where I have to get the hogs out of the field.

Over nursing will cause weight loss in cows. Guess it would do that to a hog too, but I’m betting on worms or some parasite . Interesting though. And another good night of downed hogs. I went out for a while last night and got nothing but sweaty. Lot of that going around right now. Good shooting!

That first hog looked like it worked in a shooting gallery!
The only hog I've seen that looked that emaciated was missing a front foot from the last joint down, and wasn't very mobile.
I agree that heavy nursing can cause weight loss. We refer to hogs like that as having been 'sucked down.'

Been working a sounder of hogs on my place the last few weeks. Started off with 5 or 6 sows and I have gradually whittled that down to one with about 25 or 30 piglets. Saw her the other day cross the county road and she looked just like your sow with all the little ones following.

You may not even need to shoot her. Those 25-30 Happy Meals might suck her dry and kill her off trying to nourish them all. LOL

I'm in the same boat. Had one sow left and 19-20 piglets when I killed her. Been trying to kill the shoats now...its really crazy seeing how much they've grown in just two months!

I think I have 8-9 left now.
