Cattle Chased My Boar Away...But He Came Back

Well, I spooked him first on the drive in to park. There is a break in the tree line and he ran off when I was about 300 yards away. "Son of a gun!" (paraphrased from what I was really saying at the time). I had showed up extra early to check the game camera to see if there had been any hog action. No need for that now, although I checked after the hunt and the hog had been there 4 out of the last nine days.

I set up a bit farther back than usual in hopes that he was there, waiting on the feeder to go off at 9 pm. Sure enough, he showed up and then trotted off again, which I soon discovered was because of the cattle chasing him away. When the cattle left, he returned to the feeder and I dropped him with a shot from a Custom Reloads of Dallas Nosler 140 gr. BTHP that completely overpenetrated the skull. Later, I used the hog for more ballistic testing, but dead pigs just don't visually show the wound channels like live pigs do after getting shot. Both of the carcass shots shot no exterior entry or exit damage. On cutting open the hog, the 2nd carcass shot was very difficult to find until it started to open. It looks like these rounds are penetrating 2-3" before starting to open up, then open and by the time the get to the other side are shedding well and in this case, fragmenting. Jacket and bits of core were recovered from the carcass shot, but the majority of the core exited.

Nice boar. You really threaded the needle getting that shot in between the fence wires. Good shooting.

That boar's SUCH an airhead!

Nice necropsy work on him... along with the testing work. Would've been nice to view the cranial damage from the kill shot.

Are those loads from "Stupid Chad"?

Yeah, I played that closer than I would have liked.

There is a Chad that owns Custom Reloads of Dallas, but he is not Stupid Chad. Stupid Chad is actually in the military, now deployed to the east Coast. Neither of the Chads is challenged in any way!

Oh, I recall that the "nickname" is just that... and knew you had more than one Chad acquaintance... so, I was curious which one was making the ammo. Next time you yabber with him, thank him (for me) for his service.

Interesting! The only time I've seen cattle chase hogs was when the hog got too close to a calf.
Nice necropsy work, that's always interesting.
