I had the opportunity to join diggler1833 for a hunt this week. He gave me directions, his place that is somewhere between Nowhere and a black hole...beautiful country. Getting close to his location, an old song by CW McCall, "Black Bear Road" started playing through my mind...

To give you some idea how remote this place is, the address does not appear on Google so he had me meet him at a local landmark, the cemetery. Needless to say, this area isn't exactly what you would call a tourist destination unless you are looking bigfoot or you are on a vision quest to just to try to find yourself...and diggler seems to like it that way.

Beautiful property. He gave me the $5 tour and we put some soured corn out by the pig barrel where he has been seeing hogs. We didn't see much in the way of other recent sign, so that was our focus for the evening when we started hunting just after dark. As things started off slow, we did a walk around of the various nearby pastures without any luck and so we ended up camping out for a while in a couple comfy chair 300 yards away from the bait.

I thought that was pretty far away to be watching the bait and he said it was because of the wind. During the course of the night in the clearing we were in, the wind literally blew from all 4 directions. It was mostly south easterly, but that was only about 51% of the time.

As we were in the calving pasture and coyotes had been a problem for calves, coyotes coming in to the cows and calves were considered a threat. One was dispatched when it was clear.

A short time later, the small sounder of hogs showed up and we stalked the 200 yards to get set up at about 100 yards, which was about as close as we wanted to get given the winds. We did a quick countdown and both fired. My hog went down. He has graciously let me take the largest hog of the group. His hog went down and was quickly back up on its feet and running with both of us trying to shoot it. Somewhere in the process, my hog got caught in the crossfire and suffered additional wounds as his hog ran behind it, pumping blood out of the side.

So we finished off the night with 1 coyote and 1 hog recovered, another hog mortally wounded and probably not to far off in the thicket brush. Here is the video...

Brian rolls up to Diggler and says: "I'll make ya famous." Good shootin' fellers. That second hog is toast.

Many thanks to Brian for coming out! Truth be told, my little Pulsar XQ38 Trail was not up to snuff in the tall grass to tell me that my hog was moving...I thought it had dropped in place and stayed there!

Either way, I had a great time being far too loud to successfully hunt anything (another reasdon we were 300 yards out).

Here's to meeting great new people!
