Precision Shooting of Hogs in High Vegetation

Back to the oats field in Bosque County where I could not find 2 of 3 hogs I shot last week, so this week, I took a bit of a different approach to getting better at locating of downed hogs. It is time consuming. I GPS'd everything and then went back and reviewed the video in order to go out and find hogs killed in various locations. Finding these hogs can be such a pain in the butt because visibility is so low. For the very first hog I shot, after reviewing the video to figure out landmarks to guide me, I walked out to where I expected the hog to be from my original shooting location, set up my shooting sticks as a visual marker, and started a spiral radiating search pattern. Half way around my first circuit, there was the sow, 2 yards from my shooting sticks. I had not seen her when I walked out and in disbelief, I went back to my shooting sticks and looked to where I knew the hog to be and saw no sign of it. Ridiculous.

The importance of locating the hogs in this field is so that the rancher can go out and collect them with his little tractor. So after I find the hogs, I GPS the locations and generate a map for him to go out the next day and collect the hogs for deposition elsewhere.

All 5 hogs went down where shot, which is a best case scenario.

Nothing's more satisfying than clean head/neck shots with no tracking needed. Fine work Brian.

That's really sweet that the land owner goes out and gathers the bodies for disposal. Gotta love that deal.

It works out really well. We can't drive the truck into the oat field and it was taking us a LONGGGG time to haul them out. So he figured we would spend more time killing if we weren't spending so much time dragging or hand carting them out of the field. So what would take two of us two hours to do that he could get done in a half hour.

I (we) still move hogs that don't need to go far and if we can consolidate hogs fairly easily, that gets done as well. It makes for better pics and it makes it easier on him.

I have another landowner that does the same thing, mostly because of crops.

Whack a hog in the oats! Good shooting in some tough conditions. A couple of my neighbors with open fields say the hog bones are tough on tractor tires. It’s good y’all can work together to get them out of the field.
