Things have been busy and I haven't been able to get out hunting much lately, but I slipped out Monday afternoon to try my luck. It's been raining quite a bit here in Central Texas but Sunday & Monday were overcast and without precipitation. I spied a sounder about 1,000 yards away and debated just how badly I wanted to shoot a hog. I like to take the leg quarters and back straps and there was no way for me to get a vehicle to where the hogs were. I decided I was there to hunt, and moved out hoping the hogs would move a little closer and that I could set up an ambush. It almost worked that way …
The hogs changed direction and I had to move in closer, but by now it was getting dark so I could traverse the area more easily. I got to within about 60 yards and started picking out potential targets. Most of the hogs were somewhat small and I'm committed to provide pulled pork sandwiches for a family reunion in July, so I wanted one with some meat. I finally selected one, and it went down with the first shot. I took three more shots and scored two hits before they vamoosed. The first one down was a sow weighing 80 Lbs, number two was a little male shoat that probably wouldn't move the scale over 20 Lbs soaking wet, and the third was another 80 Lb sow that appeared to be pregnant.
I hit the first sow in the shoulder and the bullet went through, so both shoulders were destroyed. I just took the hindquarters. The other 80 Lb sow was hit in a hindquarter. It took a follow-up shot to put her down for good, but I got one good hindquarter and both shoulders from her. I also got the hindquarters from the little guy. They're about the size of large chicken leg quarters! So, five leg quarters from the larger hogs plus back straps and I'm on my way to feeding the family.
Rifle is a 300 Blackout shooting 110 grain Hornady SP bullets. I was using an IR Hunter MK3 60mm Thermal Sight.
