***I'll preface this with saying that after going back to where I was shooting from/to during daylight, and I'm surprised anything made it through the brush...I had no clue how thick it was as the Trail XQ38 did not pick it up on the opposite side of the creek bank.***
We had lost two of our barn cats over the past week or so, so I decided it was time to thin out a few more coyotes. I went out at about 0145, and low and behold I came across the one sounder that had remained untouched since I transitioned to thermal hunting.
Unfortunately for me, with the monsoons we have been having I was unable to get across the creek that separated me from the hogs on our ranch. With the hogs moving (don't know if/how they winded/saw me) I had to swing around and get into a pretty crappy area for a shot on them as they stopped to root around at the base of a few big oak trees we have.
I had hoped that the hogs on the right would run left after I started shooting (I do not run suppressed) and go back to their little haven in the woods, but they ran to the right (away from the strike of the bullet). Maybe it works for un-suppressed rifles too???
Either way, I killed one. I may have hit a second, but I never found it when I went back six hours later with a tractor and forded the creek. He was a young boar, and I figure he was a little over a hundred pounds. None of the adults in this sounder are big though, maybe 150 at best. They still know how to churn some pasture though!
Almost forgot: Ambush Arms 6.8, Hornady 120SST, 77 yards, heart/lung hit, ran approx 75 yards before piling it up...
