I want another thermal with more than 3x native. This will be for shooting single hogs and coyotes at distances further than what I usually stalk to. Will be mounted .308 ar10. I won’t be shooting over 200 very often. I’ll have my regular hog gun a zeus 640 75m and this rifle. I’m not going to be shooting up sounders at close range with it. Which would you go with?

I have trijicon mk3 60mm ... and BAE UTC-x clipon, which for some reason recently I've been using on a bolt gun with a NF 7-35x scope.

So the 60mm is 4.5x and the NF with the UTC is 7x.

Well, I used to think the 4.5x was way too much magnification ... and for inside 100yds it is. But for PID and stalk determination against critters 200-500yds out, the 4.5x with 2x and 4x digital works great. And as for closer in, well I guess I've just gotten used to it.

So then along comes the 7x on the NF ... which I never intended for night hunting/critter control. But I've been using it and it works. but it is a pain in the butt for scanning ... a 360 takes 2-3 times longer because I have to scan every sector 2-3 times due to the tiny FOV. But one good thing about trying to work with 7x ... it makes the 4.5x seem like "Whew - I have so much more FOV now" :D

So, if you're used to 3x ... then 5x is gonna seems like a LOT ... and 7x is gonna seem like a crazy lot ... but i guess if you stick with it ... you will get used to it ... but good idea not to go after sounders with it because if you are alone, you will certain miss some of them coming in on you.

I take both my carbine with the mk3 60mm and the bolt gun with the nf 7x ... and I switch back and forth, scanning with one and then the other. And that takes some of the load off ... and if I saw a yote farther out than I wanted to engage with the 5.56(10.3) carbine, then I could probably switch to the 7.62(22) bolt gun in time to get it ... well maybe. I haven't been fast enough 3 times in the past 2 weeks. :)

So which would I go with? If I wanted to be able to PID out 500-800yds to decide what to do next ... then I guess I'd go with the 7x ... that's what I'm doing ... and it has pros and cons ... but if you've got another 3x with you and you don't mind a bit of a struggle, I think you can find a spot for it.
